I ran out of gas today!
Im a jackass, driving to school i did run out of gas. a friend was passing by a few minutes later, flagged him down, he went and got some. Meanwhile this guy who lived across the street from where i was stranded ran me up to the gas station and i bought a tank and 5 bucks worth of gas. good thing i did to cuz when i came back my friend had already put what he brought in and it wasnt enough to make the car start. so i put the 5 bucks worth in repeating thanking the guy nice enough to drive me up to the gas station and probably be late for work to help me. i was stuck on a busy road, with the tail end of my fg2 sticking out on the road a little bit.
Yes, i feel like a complete dumbass and will never let this happen again. The car just slowly came to a stop, not a good feeling when your not close to anything and already late for school. thank god there were people there to help me. It didnt even seem like there were no bars for a long time. i was pretty shocked i ran out, but at the same time never should have pushed it that close. People say this really hurts engines, is that true? its an 08 fg2 with 3600 miles on it. Just reminding all of you, fill up as soon or before your gas light comes on. This was no fun |

Could affect the fuel pump since many vehicles use fuel as a coolant but I doubt it would ruin it on a one time basis. With 3600 miles there hasn't been any time to accumulate much junk in the tank and that wouldn't affect your fuel lines anyway since those are downstream of your fuel filter. If you were driving your engine really hard as it was running out of fuel perhaps you could be in a lean condition since the ECU "thinks" the injectors are squirting a certain amount of fuel to match the air, but I don't know the car's logic well enough to make anything other than a WAG on that. Even if it was running slightly lean for the few minutes it took for the fuel lines to evacuate it wouldn't do much. Fuel supply cutting out is a big concern for folks that seriously boost/shoot lots of NOS, where a lean condition can melt pistons!
Bottom line, don't worry but don't make it a habit for obvious reasons besides stressing your fuel system. You can use your "Trip B" to track miles when the fuel light comes on or just be conservative and fill up when you see a certain number of bars. By the way, did you do the math to figure out how many gallons actually fit in your car when you filled it the rest of the way up? |
