Film your 3rd gear grind

With all the people who have this problem why not film it? Some of you must have camcorders. Get your passenger to film the clutch and shifter at the same time maybe?

The reason there's not more videos of it is because it happens so randomly...

It's not easy to reproduce on the spot.
If it was, there would probably have been a recall already.

Is easy to replicate the problem.

Just do the same thing, don't put the shifter all the way up to the 3rd gear position and release the clutch.

The problem isn't that you are driving and then it pop out alone. The problem is that sometimes when you shift into third something gets in your way stopping you to push all the way up to the 3rd gear position and when you release the clutch you will hear the grinding and the shifter gets into the neutral position.

The workaround that I found to this issue is to be aware when the 3rd gear is not in the correct position and when I notice something weird that doesn't let me shift into 3rd effortlessly I just push a little bit harder to force it until it gets to the desired position of 3rd gear.

Is a bit difficult to explain it but at least for me has worked so far.

I hope that some of you can notice this the same way I do and use this advice in a positive way.

Shark Tek's right on the money there.. metal bushings have really aided in being able to feel whether you are in or not.. still have to approach third a bit slow when the car is cold or you can even feel a grind happening even with the clutch disengaged just when you put it in gear.

I drive alone most of the time, and I don't see any way I could drive, film, operate the clutch and gearbox, as well as get it to pop out (which is random usually).

That's how I deal with it too. But I still contend that even though that is the intelligent solution, it's not the _best_ solution. Honda produced a defective product, I shouldn't have to compensate for something as basic as shifting on a brand new car.

I also have been trying to reproduce patterns which might lead to incomplete shifts, and so far haven't been able to reliably reproduce the problem. It appears randomly. I think I'm noticing a trend when slowing down on a decline and shifting from 4th -> 3rd, but it doesn't happen all the time. More often it occurs when shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

My main problems with 3rd gear wouldn't be picked up by a camera, you just have to feel it when you're putting it in gear.

Maybe you could mount a mic right on the shifter, any vibration would be really audible.

I've had my Si grind twice so far. It only has 3000km on it. Both times It was cold AND I didn't have the clutch all the way in or let the clutch out too early before I had it all the way into third. 3rd is a little notchy sometimes but you just have to make sure it is in before letting the clutch out. So I agree with Shark Tec. However if this is as bad is it gets I would not call this defective.

well i had planned on doing this... i just cant get off my but to finish the car computer, which includes 3 cameras, nightvision and all, they where supposto be for front back and driver, but i might hurry the projest along and make it shifter clutch and dash...

the software is set to record over itself continousely every 10 min untill prompted to keep the data... all you have to do is touch the screen.

and no its not just for the camera, thats just a perk of the system, as well as the tc tuner, 10" touch screen and 300gb hdd filled with 40GB of mp3s, on the fly obdII reader... the list goes on...

wont be hard since it poppes out 3-40 times a week, and no its not because i dont engage it all the way...and i only drive 200-400km a week... i would say i average a popout once every 20km

You should come to Minnesota. All I have to do to get it to happen is start driving while it's still cold.

And before you all start screaming at me to leave it at a dealer so they can see it..... Don't bother. The dealers around here will just pretend it didn't happen.

How can they pretend? Why don't you people stand up for yourselves? Take those ******* to small claims court. It only costs a small fee to register.

Hey, have you been following me lately at all?

After over a dozen or more visits to the local dealers over the last two years, I FINALLY got one to replicate it. Walser Honda in Burnsville got it to pop out on me.

Go talk to Lisa Carlson there and request that Anton the technician drive it. Tell them you were sent in by Mike with the blue Si. Lisa will take care of you.

They swapped the MTF again and are waiting for the fix to come out (which they confirmed).

All the techs there probably hate me, because I make them do a ton of work on my rattle-filled car, but do NOT give up until they replicate it.

I had them keep it overnight and drive it first thing in the morning. I got a call later that day saying they got it to pop out. Please go there so they don't think I'm the only crazy Civic owner.

Kind of hard to take something to court when you haev utterly no evidence to substantiate your claim against one of the biggest auto conglomerates in the world.
