Update: Third Gear Concerns

I apologize in advance to any R18 members of the forum who are tired of seeing Si transmission threads popping up, but this is an important development.

After my second and most recent encounter with American Honda and the (as my dealership described her) "firecracker" of a case manager, Kenitra (see: useless), I brought my car into Walser Honda in Burnsville, MN to complain about third gear for the thousandth time.

I dropped it off, and my service manager, Lisa Carlson (if you live in the area, go to her, she is the most helpful, understanding, kind service manager of any dealership I've been to) told me that she wanted me to leave the car overnight with them because she thinks it is time something is done about this.

I talked to a new technician not much older than myself, and he said that, with regards to third gear, the problem "sounded" as though it were due to eaten up syncros caused by hard driving. Lisa assured him that I babied the car, and we went for a ride. It didn't pop out, but he did hear a pesky rattle from the rear deck I've been grinding my teeth over for a few months.

They gave me a 2006 Accord EX-L V6 automatic loaner overnight (fantastic vehicle, by the way), and kept my car overnight to drive it in the cold the next morning.

Later this afternoon, I got a call from Lisa saying Anton (the tech) got it to pop out on him once while he was driving it, and he called the Tech Line (as I requested he do to see if anything was on there), and the first thing he was told was to swap the MTF. I laughed and told Lisa, "Been there, done that...helped for a month, tops."

She told me she would call me back and Anton called back, and said he looked at ISIS and the Tech Line, and found out that there is, INDEED, a fix coming that will most likely be a recall. I asked what would be replaced, and he pulled it up, and it said the syncros and the Detend / Detent ball springs (something that helps with shifting, I guess). He didn't have a date of arrival for the fix, but said that as long as I have documented proof of the problem, it will be performed.

While I'm happy that it FINALLY was able to be replicated and I got new MTF (again), which made the car shift much smoother than it has been, I want this fix out now. I hate being impatient, but...

In any case, I wanted to update that ISIS and the Honda Tech Line confirmed for my dealership that there IS a fix coming. The dealership is VERY interested in this because its the first case they've been able to replicate it (had several others come in with no success), and they will be calling me ASAP when it comes out.

Eat your ******* heart out, Kenitra. You're an embarrassment to American Honda and I can't believe you haven't been fired for your manners towards customers. Shame on you. Funny that a "lowly" Honda technician was the one who knew about a third gear fix, and your hoity-toity ass said there wasn't (read: refused to look for me).

Sorry...this is two years worth of venting.

DON'T GIVE UP GUYS.

Congratulations Mike!

I dropped my Si off at the dealer tonight, and will go back tomorrow morning for a ride in it with the tech. :fingers crossed:

Moe, go to Lisa Carlson at Walser Honda in Burnsville and tell her Mike with the Fiji Si sent you for your third gear issues.

Lisa will definitely take care of you. You know I've had some big time quality issues with my Civic, and she has gone above and beyond to help me with them. She's a real winner. Truly.

My advice, though: make an appointment on a cold day, and when you get there, let the car sit until the engine is cold.

I hate to even say this, but to those of you in warmer climates, you're going to have a harder time getting it replicated. The cold weather exacerbates the problem innumerably, and it definitely helped get mine done.

I have not had success at several tries at all four other Twin Cities area dealers with this problem. A member sent me a message and said Luther Hopkins Honda in Hopkins had a few confirmed and are on the wait list, but I like Lisa, so...

Ken, that should help. The mornings and during cold weather are definitely when it is prone to slipping out or being a problem.

Jesus, if this actually turns out to be a recall that's a ton of money spent by Honda. I wonder what percentage of people are having the problem (I have only grinded gears twice in my car - both were 3rd gear and both were when the car was cold). I can't say I have a "problem" with 3rd gear, but it's always on my mind.

Given that this affects the Accord V6 6MT, the RSX-S, and several others? A lot of money.

However, chances are it will only be for the Si. I'm almost certain Honda won't touch the RSX-S or Accord tranny issues unless they do what we're doing.

Did Honda honestly think taht this wouldn't happen putting this tranny in a car that sells 15,000 a year? How many RSX-S's were made annually?

It's not over yet, Juan. I won't stop fighting for this cause until the release comes out and you can get yours fixed, too.

A year after getting mine fixed, those shifts are getting rough again. No grind or popout, but it's making me antsy.
