Angry Case Number: N012008-04-10000891

Jennifer Carroll (jenn4480)

2007 Civic Si Coupe

A: Notchy shifting from 2nd to 3rd
B: Grinding from 2nd to 3rd
C: Popping out of 3rd gear
D: Clutch gone out at 10,000 miles

Country: GA/USA

Call takers name: Unknown
Case managers name: Unknown as of yet

I bought my car with 2200 miles on it in December 2007. As soon as I bought it I had the above mentioned 3rd gear problems. I thought that maybe I needed to get used to it because I had been driving an Altima manual and an Eclipse 6 speed previously. But I never had time to decide that it was definately not me. 10 days ago my clutch came out. The day prior I noticed slipping so when I got up the next morning I planned on taking it to the dealership but I didn't make it that far. I was stuck on the side of the road until I got a ride and a tow truck. Honda took the tranny apart and said that I had been riding the clutch because the flywheel showed hot spots. Now tell me why that never happened to any of my other MT cars? They say they won't pay for it because the clutch is a wearable item. I contacted American Honda on Thursday, April 10th. Haven't heard from anyone yet but when I do if I get the same "we haven't heard of this before" BS, I will be mentioning everyone's case numbers along with the video clip from the news station in CA. I am just so pissed that Honda thinks we are all so stupid that we wouldn't find each other and figure out that we weren't alone! I'll update when I hear something from AH.

Update: Spoke with Scott this morning. He has offered labor only on the clutch repair but he did inform me of the TSB on the tranny. He said they would be replacing the third gear set. I'm not sure if I should take it. On one hand, I don't feel like it's my fault the clutch came out and on the other that may be my best offer. I'm still mulling it over.

CASE NUMBER:
N012008-04-1402257

DATE OF CALL TO HONDA:
Monday 04/14/2008

WHO:
Jason (Sasebonian)

WHAT:
2007 NHBP Civic Si Sedan w/Navi/ST
(a) notchy shifting
(b) resistance going into any gear (particularly 2nd & 3rd)
(c) grinding of any type, in any gear not caused by operator error
(d) transmission not engaging into any gear (particularly 2nd & 3rd)
(e) transmission kicking out/popping out into neutral from 3rd gear

SUMMARY:
Country: USA
Call Taker’s Name: Jonathan
Case Manager’s Name: I forgot to ask for one.
What Happened: I called about the latest TSB 08-020 for the 3rd Gear issue with the Si. "Jonathan" from Honda Tech line did say that they are aware of it officially now, (since the TSB is posted) but it's up to the individual dealership to decide if the TSB fix can will applied. I asked who/where would I want to go to escalate the issue past the dealership, he said that there is no escalation point. The dealership has final say. So "Jonathan" said that if they can't duplicate it, then nothing from Honda will happen. He also added that there is nothing that Honda America/Corporate can do if any dealer doesn't follow through with warranty claim. Jonathan recommended that if it doesn't duplicate the first time, then I can only keep having my car checked everytime it happens. But he was very nice and was very happy that the TSB was offically released though. He said he got tired of having to tell people there "was something in the works but no word yet...'' and seemed sympathetic to our issues. We'll see what happens to my car when Pacific Honda calls me back.

Status update as of 04/15/2008:
Hi all,

Here's a status update on my attempt for TSB work on my Si:

After sending in my car yesterday (04/14/08) to Pacific Honda, I got a call back from my Service Advisor named Jerremie.

Jerremie started off: "Hi Jason, well I've got some bad news for you. We were unable to duplicate the problem."

I was like, "Awe man, I knew that was gonna happen."

Jerremie, "Hahaha but the good news is that even though we couldn't replicate the issue, we're just gonna go ahead and take care of the repair/replacement according to the TSB."

Me: "Wooohooo! That's freakin awesome!"

So after a little more small talk, I picked my car up and will have to bring it back Monday 04/21/08 as they have to order some of the parts required by the TSB. Other than that, the experience was over all not too bad. Especially since this was officially my first time I sent my Si into the dealership for the issue. Eversince I was aware from the boards that I wasn't the only one with an 07 Si experiencing this 3rd gear issue, I never bothered to bring my car in since there wasn't an offical fix. I didn't want to deal with the MTF workaround since I felt it was always something more than that.

So yay! Granted it wasn't as easy as some other experiences on this board where they were lucky enought to get a call from the dealer, or the dealer didn't even question the TSB, Pacific still was cool enough to get me the TSB fix even though they still couldn't reproduce the issue. I'll let you all know if this actually fixes the issue. I'm glad at least they are using different 3rd gear parts compared to others where I read they just replace the old 3rd gear parts with the same versions.

Again, score +1 for this new TSB!

SUMMARY:
Country: U.S.A.
Call Taker’s Name: Darrell Harville
Case Manager’s Name: Darrell Harville
What Happened:
I called (on 05-15-08) my local Honda dealershihp and told them about it, gave them the service bulliten # and set up a date to drop it off (will drop off on 05-19-08)...then got onto the BBB website and gave them a couple links to our 3rd gear pages...got a call (on 05-16-08) no less than 12 hours later from Honda Care telling me that the BBB called them and informed them of my complaint. Darrell told me that he was going to call the service manager at Tameron Honda Eastern Shore and inform him of it, then asked me about getting me a rental if the fix was going to take a while...will update later

UPDATE!! 5-19-2008
Took the si into Tameron Honda and spoke with Eloy S. He and I test drove my vehicle, had severe issues with 1st and 2nd gear. It WOULD NOT shift into the gears...so they are going to replace the transmission, got a rental free also.

A week later Honda calls me and tells me that they are still waiting on the parts...there is a Nationwide BACK-ORDER (lol) and to drop off the rental and pick up my car till it gets in. I do so, and take her home, wash and wax her.

Honda tells me that 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th gears are torn to HELL, and it had to of happened before I bought it (considering I have only had about 5k miles to drive it) And they replaced ALL those gears, even 3rd (under warrantee)
I cant wait for the call to come pick her up

Update: 06/22/08
Got my car back, had it for a week, and it ended up back in the shop...the transmission was making...well not grinding noises...but like BAD rubbing noises...like they forgot to put tranny fluid in...so im back in the rental....awesome...

Uptate: 7/04/08
Got my car back again, they had installed a faulty berring(sp?) the first time, and when putting a new one in, that one fell apart, so the third time was the charm...cars running good, and finally mine after a MONTH of waiting

What Happened:
I took my Si into Little Apple Honda in Manhattan, KS about 2 months ago, complaining about the fact my car wasn't shifting properly into 3rd. I told the service guy that it's happened about 20 times in the 12,000 miles I've driven my car in the last 9 months I've had it (since new). They took it for a 15 minute test drive and couldn't replicate the problem. They had the audacity to blame it on my shifting technique, noting that many owners "quick shift" their Civics and there was no problem with the car, even though I had the damn TSB sitting in the passenger seat right next to them, describing the problem and the FIX. Hey, I'm no spring chicken...in fact, I'm a 40 year old guy who's driven a stick since he was 14. I KNOW what shifts right and what is shifting wrong. Little Apple mentioned if they couldn't replicate the problem ( in 10 or 15 minutes), it's just not there. Morons.

So...I get a call from Honda asking about my service experience. Hah! Well, I held nothing back. They took all the info down and then had me fill out another survey via the web...then nothing...until a couple days ago.

Out of the blue, I get a call from Sara Sosa at American Honda asking me what the problem was. I told her the same spiel about the poor shifting and lack of customer service. She gave me the same piece of crap about having to replicate the problem so they know what to fix. I told her they KNOW what the problem is, they wrote a damn TSB on it, listing parts replacement!!! To make a long story short, they were absolutely NO help whatsoever. Little Apple Honda was recently hit by the tornado that went through Manhattan a couple weeks ago...unfortunately, it didn't level the F#$%ING place completely. What a bunch of dilweeds!!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Si, just wish Honda would take care of an obvious problem or at least wished my dealership was "stand-upish" enough to take care of a customer. I'm bummed out...

OK, I'm no longer bummed. I sent an email to Little Apple Toyota Honda. The following is BOTH the email I sent and the one I received from the owner. Just thought I'd share.

Title of email: Which decision was the poor one, buying a Honda or buying it from Little Apple Toyota/Honda?

Dear Sirs:

I have no idea how this email actually goes to. If you aren't the intended
recipient, please forward to the person who is. Frankly, I'm tired of getting
the runaround.

I bought a Honda Civic Si sedan from you folks last year. Over the last ten
months, however, I've had trouble getting my car into 3rd gear smoothly (about
25 times in 16,000 miles), a couple times it's felt like it was "in" only to
kick "out" when applying the gas. Weird...

I'm a member of 8thcivic.com and thought all of my prayers had been answered
when several members pointed out that Honda actually put out a TSB on the
problem. I hurried in to your service department, explained my woes, hoping for
a fix to what is becoming an increasingly annoying problem. They said they'd
take a look. Called me back a few hours later, saying they couldn't replicate
the problem. It's happened to me a couple dozen times in 10 months and it didn't
pop up in the 10 minutes they drove it?? How odd!! (Please note my sarcasm, I'm
laying it on pretty THICK). Your service department told me that until they can
replicate the problem, they won't perform the fix pointed out in the Honda
Service Bulletin. Hmmmm, what should I do, let your service manager drive my Si
for a couple weeks until it happens to him...I don't think so.

Like I said, I'm a member of 8thcivic.com, several members have stated that
their dealers took care of the fix without replicating the problem in-house. My
question to you is, why will their "big city" dealerships take care of them and
my "hometown" dealership treat me like I'm a liar?? I made it a POINT to do
business with a Manhattan business, thinking I'd be taken care of. Was I wrong??
Please let me know if I was and my next purchase won't be a waste of your time.

Sincerely,

Kevin Nichols

The Reply:

Mr. Nichols, I just received your e-mail. I have asked my service manager to contact you immediately to ask you to bring your car in for the TSB repair. If you do not hear from Kevin Campbell at Little Apple Honda please contact me directly, Tom Holcombe, 785-539-7441, as quickly as possible. Thank you for contacting us and please be assured you will be taken care of.

Tom Holcombe, Owner.
