Also, amusingly, the retro is the only legal way of having HIDs in a Civic, as there's no Civic in any market (not even JDM or EDM) that comes stock with HID projectors. People should note, HID kits produce a significant glare in stock housings designed for Halogen bulbs. It's frustrating to other drivers like myself, to see this blinding bluish white glare from other cars behind you or approaching you because they're running illegal HID kits. Please note, that every legitimate (read, non-ebay) supplier of HID kits specifically state: "Not for road use"... this is because HID kits do not meet DOT requirements for light patterns when placed in a Halogen reflector assembly. Older HIDs (things like older Acuras) either use projectors, or reflector housings specifically designed for the output from HIDs. Three solutions to this in most Honda cars: 1) Source LHD HID projectors from non-USDM/non-JDM market (think some of the Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Singapore etc) or from EDM LHD market (Germany, France). Install proper HID bulbs & Ballasts. Enjoy correct DOT legal HID setup. 2) Retrofit: I'm sure this has been covered, but simply put, modify your stock housings to accept the projector from an OEM HID setup (TSX is common). Install proper HID bulbs & ballast. Enjoy "legal" HID setup (note, the DOT does not have an area to cover HID retrofits, but a true correct retrofit will meet the DOT light pattern) 3) Leave your lights alone! Seriously, I don't get why so many people think the HID look is so cool. 90% of the cars I see out there, have some ridiculous color like 6k+ that just doesn't provide sufficient light. More often than not, I see them with their highbeams on, in conditions that they'd likely have no problem with if they had their standard halogen bulbs in. The reason OEM HIDs work so well, is because of the design of the projector or reflector, that points the light in the correct directions. True HID lighting, when aimed properly, does penetrate the darkness farther, and help you see farther. But these kits just don't do it. I once did a comparison for light pattern on my Civic, stock H4 halogens v 6000K H4 HID kit. The stock bulbs produced light further from the car in the forward direction, and had a distinct shape to the lighting pattern. The HID kit didn't go as far by about 8ft, and produced more light above and to the sides of the car, where it wasn't useful. Moral of the story: OEM Projectors (if available) > OEM retrofit >>>>>>>> HID kits. |
