what to do about dirty engine bay??

hey guys, i live in Minnesota where obviously it snows alot and the streets are plowed quite often with salt (for the ice). Usually with my other cars this doesn't happen but for some odd reason my engine bay is kinda dirty with dirt and debris (mainly dirt and dried salt) from the streets ( the stuff must be making it through from under the car even though my underguards are still in tact). my question is it safe to hose down the engine bay (this doesn't sound safe at all but had to ask)?? if not, are there special car wash places or special equipment you can buy to do this??? any input will be appreciated.

try to use synthetic oil and avoid steam cleaning your engine bay. Just get a damp cloth and wipe it off and allow plenty of time to dry.
