Talking Honda is going to Fix my 3rd Gear!

I went to Yellowhead Honda in Edmonton, and I told them about my issue. He said - sure I heard about that. Did you change your MTF? I said no. He said good, then the problem will still be bad, they will be able to find it, and they will replace the syncros (and any other damaged parts)

He was more then familiar with the issue, and even though there wasn't an official bulletin, There is some Tech Chat they use where all the techs converse with each other and it is a somewhat common issue (no kidding?)

He mentioned that they have updated the parts 2 times already trying to "solve" this issue, but they were still shit, and there is yet another replacement part that may permanently solve it.

Now I am happy, but I am also concerned that they are taking my transmission apart. Will it be the same when it's put back together? (damn well better be)

They were really nice, and I recommend anyone in edmonton or surrounding areas go there, they were quite helpful.

My appt. is on Jan 7th, and will take a few days to a week. I will let everyone know how it goes!

But good luck!

They're just going to be using the same parts as are already in your car, so I wouldn't expect a miracle.

What IS a miracle, however, is that your dealership acknowledged it as a problem and agreed to fix it.

That is what I said to him.

Like I stated, he mentioned that they have replaced the parts with different parts now 3 times to solve this issue. Honda IS AWARE (afaik)

Think of it as Revision.

Car came with Rev A synchros.

Cool Service dude is putting in Rev C Parts.

My middle fingers are crossed!

^there is abig difference between swapping an engine and rebuildaing a transmission....honestly i would say a tranny rebuilt is much more difficult.
all they did for your car is unbolt it and disconnect any wiring/hoses. no real rocketscience.....

I've seen this tech chat before. It is usefull for the tech to read about tips and tricks that the repair manual doesn't detail out. I had a Honda Insight and the tech had never worked on one so he went to that website to read up and research trends and issues.

Somebody with access to honda parts lookup can see the different partnumbers if they are using updated parts. I know that VW uses alpha letters at the end to show updates. 1234a verse 1234b

I've done that before, with an official Honda Service Bullitin, and they said "We've never seen that before, it doesn't exist, we're not doing it".

And I suspect they'll say the same with this. I am very, very glad you got it done. Can I ask what exactly you had them do in order to replicate it? Anything special?

Everytime I do it, it either happens and they ignore it, or it wont do it.

Is the "3rd gear problem" so bad that you can't correct it with more deliberate throttle or shifting? I occasionally have trouble going into 2nd or 3rd, usually when I'm driving like a granny and shifting at (for example) 4k rpm (for an entry into 2nd or 3rd at 3k rpm.) I'm pretty deliberate with shifting, so the only trouble I have is grinding (not popping out once actually in-gear.) In other words it simply feels like the synchro isn't syncing at odd RPMs.

Please leave your feedback so I know if a transmission overhaul is in my future...

The dealer can't pull a Sargent Schultz and just say "I see nothing". If a bulletin exists, a call to Honda America to have them educate the dealer is in order.

I am going to add a SS and bushings AFTER they repair it as well, I have been waiting to do any mods to my car until such time (as in, I am literally sitting beside a cold air intake, exhaust is coming, headlights, SS, ECU flash) I can't wait!

Congrats on getting it fixed. Hopefully the new parts make a difference. I had my 3rd gear and syncro replaced on the 07 like a month ago for other reasons and it was only normal for like 300 miles, just like when it was new, then it started grinding a bit again. Still did the early AM cold popout too.

I did. Seems the Honda of America needs dealer acknowledgment before they'll give you the time of day on an issue. Because, after all, it's your word against the quality name of a dealership.

I'm very displeased with the service so far. They closed my complaint without ever even bothering to talk to me. They "didn't know what I wanted them to do" because she wouldn't do anything unless the dealer could replicate it. Nice bureaucracy.
