Hello, always been a fan of the Civic Si sedan (never truly liked the EP3 and really didn't like the FN2 we got in europe). Found a FA5 sedan I am going to look at next week. Since you guys know the car a lot better then I do I thought you would spot strange things a lot better then me.

I am not sure the car looks as good as the owner says it is as me and my friend spotted few suspicious things even from the pictures. I would really like to buy it but I don't want to buy a bad car.

here are pictures from the seller (moved to imgur, google drive kept braking the image links everytime I added some pictures)
https://imgur.com/a/q98b9

The car should be 09/2009 DBP FA5 with 62000km (40k miles) and in good shape and with FD2R 5.1 LSD gearbox (with invoice for the replacement). Bought in 08/2012 from a us soldier in germany who bought it in canada.
From the info that the seller sent me the car was in a minor frontal crash when he bought it. But not sure if it really was as miner as he says.

Problems I've spotted from the pics:

The hood is not in the middle, the gap on the driver side is bigger then on passenger side and the grill is from a newer one I guess - but the car is supposed to be be repaired from a light frontal crash so acceptable
also the plate holder has a crack in right upper corner but the plate looks intact
Image

the inner fender guard is kinda wonky, also the bumper color looks a bit different to the fender, but that could be a good thing that the fender was not damaged only the bumper, but than I don't understand what happened to the fender guard
Image

the rear bumper looks to be repainted from this picture - the seller didn't say anything about any damage to the rear - could be just the photo though, will see in person
Image

the SRS light is not on even when the engine is not started - my friend says the srs light should only come off after you start the engine - is that true?
also 51001 mileage on picture is kinda suspicious looking number
Image

the mats don't seem to be original
the original have red Si logo, this seems like there is some white lettering...no big deal on replacing worn ones but why cheap out on such cheap part that can be easily bought OEM new from dealer for the same price as not as good looking non-originals
2007-2011 Civic Si 4 Door Carpet Floor Mats (Graphite Black) (Set of 3)
Image

and most importantly the seat side bolster really doesn't look like 40k miles...could be the side airbag was fired and the seats were replaced for different ones from a lot older car...especially in conjunction with the srs light not being on worries me the most
Image

what do you guys think? can you please have a look at the other pics (the first link) and see if you can find more strange looking things?

I will be very sad to walk away from this one but I have to stay reasonable no matter how much I want that car even though I might not have other opportunity to find another one in europe...I'd rather pay more (a lot more) for importing a good one but flying to us to look at a car is kinda costly ;o]

I will be going to see it with a professional who specializes in inspecting used cars so hopefully he will spot if there are bigger problems the seller wasn't honest about

I have my 3rd civic - the ukdm ones...two of them the b18c4 mb6 and having a hard time finding a replacement car and the FA5 would be just perfect for me but not sure this one is the one to buy

I have the OBD2 bluetooth modul and torque app that can read ecu fault codes so I will take it and try it, hopefully it will work as it didn't work with my old car but worked in friends newer one.

any tips what to look for on inspection/test drive? is there a buying used guide on the forums specific to 8th gen? I've found 2 threads asking for advice but have no tips at all (apart from 3rd gear problems) and a few general ones from some car sites but not anything specific to 8th gen civic ;o[

Thx in advance for any help and tips.

P.S. just noticed I posted in 6th gen si section...kinda confused now if I posted it in the correct section or not...mods feel free to move it to correct section if I haven't

Okay, So i'm not a mechanic so i can only comment on what i know about the car from stock and how it wears.

I'll only comment on a few superficial things.

Mats - Those mats are filthy, but they look like they are cut exactly like the OEM mats. they could just be originall mats that are so dirty that white dirt has gotten on the red Si symbol and caused discoloration. I would be replacing them anyway.

Tires - What kinds of funky-ass snow tire tread pattern is that???

Seat wear - these seats wear exactly like that pretty early. It could be the owner was a bigger person causing more wear on the side bolstering. That would be a more sensical explanation than someone replacing it with an older used seat.

Two more things - 1)I've never trusted second hand cars where suspension components have been messed with and 2) that's a very pretty car with very low miles (for the year), it's going to be hard to find anything wrong enough to turn that deal down.

Things the check on test drive. When you test drive seriously wring it out through the first three gears, shift at redline to see if the synchros are wearing heavily and that the CMC isn't in need of replacement. If you're locked out of a gear (most likely second gear), the CMC is probably going, if it grinds (usually 3rd) your synchros are hurting.

Good Luck!

thx for your time to look and reply AcAciA1153...bit shame only one reply from 200 views but hope more will chime in

the winter tires look to be Dunlop SP Wintersport 3d according to parts of the lettering and pattern style...those are one of the best winter tyres you can get in europe...I myself have currently wintersport 4d and I always choose quality tires
the owner also had Potenza RE050 and Yokohama Parada spec-2 (seen on some of the pictures) according to the mail he sent me

regarding the seat I know the driver bolster is the most prone place for wear and I've been thinking the same as you - big person, but I might be just making excuses since I really want to like the car ;o]
the army soldier should not be fat, muscle type maybe, still the wear seemed kinda excessive for the mileage. Have seen cars for sale with 2-4x the mileage with no seat wear. The current owner can be seen on the pic with the funky fender guard in reflection. He seems to be big but he had the car only 2 years and says did only over 10.000km. He says it is his 3rd car so he had it as a weekend car (not a good thing as those 10k miles were probably full throttle ones - I already bought one lemon with 70k km that was in worse shape then my 245k km one)

The suspension has eibach springs with -35mm (1.38 inch) drop and eibach stabilizers front and back. Not too keen on buying lowered car but that is kinda to be expected with this model.

can anyone pls comment on the srs light only coming off after engine starts?

If the srs light does not come on, I would guess there was an airbag deployment and the previous owner didn't replace one or more of the airbags. I bet he just took out the bulb for the srs symbol.

EDIT... If you are concerned, He might have swapped out the cluster with a lower mileage one, then taken out the srs bulb so he wouldn't have to replace one or more of the airbags. Not sure how to check to see if any have been replaced.

Maybe a scan tool can tell you if there was airbag deployment. Good luck.

the car was in light front crash and even if it wasn't many owners go for the red jdm emblems as it looks a lot better with them (especially on blue car) and they can be bought quite cheap...the rear one looks to be the standard one just plasti dipped/painted matt black (same as the chrome trim above the number plate)...so I wouldn't really axe the car just because of the emblems not matching up ;o]]

I did all the free vin checks I could find and also paid for two checks online and nothing looks too suspicious but I am still kinda not 100% sure the car is legit

guess will have to wait what the mechanic says when he inspect the car personally

EDIT: I have watched lots of video reviews to find out about the SRS light coming off or not before engine start. Downloaded the owners manual to find the srs light location on the cluster and after lot of searching found a vid where you can see the SRS light lighting up upon powering up the electronic systems and then before starting engine it is already off....so that takes away my biggest worry about sthg wrong with the airbags so the seats really could be just worn out faster then normally for some reason...still it's uncommon as I've also looked at many civic si ads and lot of cars with much higher mileage didn't have the seats worn out like that and those who had had in excess of 80k miles...so there still is hope I am just being too suspicious, but better be safe then sorry so I am still being cautious

Taking a quick look at the pics

-front bumper and grill look like they have been replaced. Paint/fitment look off on bumper and the grill has wrong finish (oem is more of a gloss black) probably 3rd party, placement of si badge also looks off.

-Passenger wheel liner has been replaced and looks non oem.

-Rear badges (civic and si) are in wrong location (too high).

-Rear bumper paint match looks suspect (might just be the pics).

You can check the srs light (and only the light) by running the tach test as explained in the youtube video below.

In my opinion the car is suspect to say the least.

He's completely right, the civic and Si should be about flush with the bottom of the taillight. That trunk has, at the very least, been de-badged at some point (possibly for repaint, or even replaced).

The front Si symbol is too close to center and it just looks too big (but that could just be me)

thx jak.. & AcAciA1153 for your useful observations...

the dash test video is really helpful, will definitely try that...also I've seen a vid where the srs light comes on after turning the power and than later when starting the engine it is already off so it doesn't seem to be true that it stays on all the time until engine is started and therefore would mean there is some problem when it is not lighted on the picture without engine running

I have noticed the rear civic badge is red instead of silver as well but would never notice them being too high...well spotted man....I do actually really like the red civic badge but it raises another questions about the car

I think the si badge in the front is actually a rear one which seems to be bigger...again I do like the way it looks...gives the car more presence then the smaller original one and the red badges compliment the DBP really well

also noticed that the steering wheels does not have the same perforated leather material as most of the us civics I've seen in the advertisments do....but I've looked through that huge almost 500 picture gallery on edmunds and found few FA civic photos that doesn't have the perforated leather as well so it's not a direct evidence of sthg wrong...on the other hand I think all the europe civics has that kind of wheel so it could be a replacement from eu civic because of airbag deployment during the front crash that the owner was talking about....not sure how big of a bump it needs to be to fire an airbag and if the car can still be ok and repairable without any defects...the steering wheel also has a jdm H logo so maybe it could just be finishing touches to improve the car looks which I genuinely think they do

the front mask could be just plasti dipped or painted flat black as well as the rear trunk chrome trim and H badge probably are so it could be just the owner doing small mods to improve the looks (I think he did spend some time pampering it but hard to say how solid is the base car underneath)

hard to judge really from pics....hope the technician will tell me if the car has had some serious crash or not and if I should stay away from it....he specializes in inspecting used cars and was recommended to me by a friend as very very good and thorough...when my friend used his services he told the seller more about the car then he knew himself and he was not happy to hear all that as he later wrote on the forum...so will see...still haven't completely ruled the car out as I don't want to turn down on an opportunity to buy one....will have lot of problems importing the car directly from us (since it's not being sold in eu) and the fact that it is already registered in eu makes it a lot easier....will have to look around how much it would cost to import a different one, but this car looks really good at first glance....with all the mods I would have to do to make it road legal in eu (if it was from us and not canada) and some of the mods like the FD2R gearbox it would probably cost me quite a lot to get a similar car to this one

The front and rear Si badges aren't interchangeable; the front one has 2 screws that go into the emblem from the back, while the back one just sticks on.

The front right fender linear is probably an aftermarket one, that's why it doesn't fit perfect.

Looks like the TPMS light is on in the pic with the engine started. The sensors could be missing from the wheels (not a big deal, just that the light stays on and your TPMS won't tell you when your tire pressure is low).

It's normal for the bumpers (and the rest of the plastic parts) to be a slightly different shade of color than the metal parts, for some reason this is how these cars come from the factory. This is more obvious at certain angles.
