Terrible grinding noise while reversing

I just got my '07 civic si sedan today and i've noticed that while reversing, it makes this really ugly grinding/buzzing kinda noise on top of the engine noise. does anybody have any idea what might be causing this? =/

I doubt it's grinding you're hearing... it's normal for their to be a sound, kind of like a "buzzing" when you're in reverse.

The reverse gear is straight cut (vs angled cut like the forward gears for strength) so it make a whining noise when moving. (probably done on purpose, when anyone hears that sound they know a car is backing up) It also gets no synchros so you cant be moving back or forward at all when putting it into R.

^word. Its a spur gear rather than a helical gear. You'll hear a bad noise if you go in R while moving forward, don't do that. It's normal to hear a mechanical/non-grinding noise while in R and moving backwards just because the whole tooth is making contact at the same time.

I have an 06 si and the only times I ever hear a grinding sound is when the car is rolling back because of the slope on the driveway and I try to shift into reverse while it's still moving. Are you moving when your shifting into reverse?

i thought it was a reverse supercharger. LOL!
as for a grind just dont try to put it in reverse while you are rolling backwars it'll grind like crazy.

that brings up an interesting question, what do you do if you're on a driveway or other hill and need to put it in R? do you just put it in neutral and let it roll back?

You make sure u hold the brake pedal while u shift into R

the car must not move while you shift into R because the gear is not syncronized (as said above)

And if it's a bit hard to get it in reverse, toss it in any other gear first then throw it in reverse, should slide in easy.

I wouldnt think itd be bad to shift out of reverse while moving. As long as it pulls out of gear easy.

I don't think so. I wouldn't do that going in reverse too fast, try to stop as much as possible since your clutch has to change direction then get the wheels up to speed.

It would be sweet if 1-4 had this too. (5+6 wouldn't for highway)
