Transmission, drivetrain whine

Today while driving my daughters Si, I noticed a pronounced whine in 4th gear traveling at or around 40 mph. This type of whine is gear associated, as I felt no feed back inthe brake pedal, and the whine got progressively lower throught the gears while increasing speed. Is this a Honda noise or cause for concern? My wifes accord has its own personality, but this gear whine does seem normal. I searched and got no specificty relating to my issue. thank you for any input.

Mine doesn't have a gear whine in 4th but rather in 2nd.

Given how sketchy these transmissions really are I'd say it's probably something that's more common than uncommon, though. If it worries you too much take it into Honda and have it checked out. If something goes wrong later you already have it noted in your history that you thought something might be going on.

Good luck!

It'll really depend on the dealership (as some have shown just to not care much about helping the customer out). The best thing you can do is have them take the car for a drive and just simply have them replicate the situations in which you hear it. If at all possible try to ride with them.

If it's a relatively quiet whine I would think nothing of it. If it's something that's pretty loud then there may be something else going on that could be of concern. My honest guess is the most they'd do for it currently is swap out the Honda manual transmission fluid for some new (and supposedly "updated") Honda manual transmission fluid unless it's something so loud and noticible that they have to take a more serious action.

Cleo Bay in killeen is replaceing the transmission. 3rd and 4th gear are shot, a Honda defect, an apology, and a rental car until the new xmsn comes from American Honda in California. I have been out of town for the last couple of days. I will go to the dealer and see if they let me look at the tranny. 3187 miles and I got the bad one. Lucky I guess, I got no hassle. Daughter is happy except for the Mazda 3 they gave her for the rental.
