Difference between a 07 Civic Si engine made in US and an Si Engine made in Japan
I just bought a 07 TW Civic Si Coupe picking it up next week...i went to honda yesterday to discuss the final financing details and about my insurance. The the sales man at honda told me that the car is here and that it was shipped from Iowa, He also said that my engine was shipped from Japan... I dont know if that makes my engine any better, but the sales man said its a high performance vtec b/c its from Japan...i guess i should believe him??
Is there a difference? |

I thought all the Si's were made in Canada. I know you can tell where it is made by the vin number.
My dealer told me my car was being shipped from Japan but they were full of crap because the vin said otherwise. I forget what the number range is but there is a thread in here somewhere. |

To the OP...whether the engine is built in Japan or Canada or Tumbuktu, if you are purchasing a Civic Si Coupe in the US, the engine is still a K20Z3 engine. Why do you think the SPECS would change based on where it is built? The stock SPECS on the K20Z3 engine is/should be the same for all stock K20Z3 engines sold by Honda dealers in the US. Is your dealer implying that because it is Japan-built it somehow has different SPECS? The build QUALITY is a different story...I am sure if you did a search you can find people arguing that Japan-built is king and Canada-built is inferior. Thats a debate that I don't have an opinion on right now. Please correct me if I got anything wrong. |

Also...you can verify where your car was assembled if you have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

FOR THIS VEHICLE Final Assembly Point: Alliston, Ontario Country of Origin: Engine: U.S.A. Transmission: JAPAN Your window sticker is more reliable than your salesman. Where does your window sticker say your engine was made? And he's just lying because he can if he's telling you that you are lucky because you are getting a special "high performance vtec b/c its from Japan." There is one version of the Si engine for this model. Why do some salesmen feel the need to lie even when there is no good reason? Maybe he senses that you might walk and he wants you to believe that this particular Si is special? Last edited by LCG20; 05-03-2007 at 03:01 PM. |

The K20Z3 is definitely not built in Canada, or any Honda engines for that matter, as Honda does not have an engine plant in Canada, yet. Honda is in the process of building a new engine plant up here though, which will compliment the U.S. Anna Engine plant in Ohio in NA.
From this article dating back in 2004, http://world.honda.com/news/2004/c041109_b.html, all Honda automobiles assembled in NA have engines built in the U.S. Plants. This of course, excludes the RSX-S, which was built in Japan, and the old Si hatch, built in England. It would not make sense to manufacture the K20 in NA, as there were no cars assembled in NA back then that used this engine. From the look of things (demand vs. availability - i.e. Honda would sell more if they could built more Si's), the K20Z3 appears to be built in Japan, hence the global shortage of them, leading to limited production of Si's. |
