vtec kick?

i've driven in a friend's rsx type s before and i remember hearing the engine sound change when vtec kicked in but no noticable "stuck to the seat" feeling. it was a few years ago though so maybe i don't remember. how would you describe the "vtec kick"?

Go to a Honda dealership and Test drive one. No real way to describe it besides a slight surge of power.

There's no pushed back into the seat feeling, probably from the lack of torque, but you can feel there's a change and can def. hear it.

i dont get the pushed back feeling, but i know the car is going faster because i start passing cars quicker.

I've read that the RSX-S power curve is smoother than the Si. So there isn't as noticeable cam crossover in the RSX-S. The Si which actually cuts back some power just before Vtec crossover, give the illusion of more power, which is why we feel the change. The Hondata reflash makes the Si's power curve more like that of the RSX-S in giving a smother change. Thus less of a feeling when Vtec crossover happens. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

^ Yep, there is a loss of torque right before VTEC kicks in. Just look at the dyno graphs.

VTEC, exactly like turbo lag, but without the power.

The fact that i didn't feel the crossover in my cousins type-s turned me away from the it i like the loud aggressive crossover on the SI the type-s should have been the same =/

personally, i think not feeling it as much, as in the type s and certain reflashes ive seen for the supercharger on our cars (http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/showt...ight=comptech), is better for performance. if you look at some baseline dynographs or even ones done with only boltons, there is a huge dip before vtec kicks in (like http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33955 or Dyno Results: FA5 & FG2 or http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/showt...ighlight=dyno), so there is actually less power on tap before the "kick" that we all love. i honestly think its a bit of a marketing scheme on hondas part

I think the drop in power is because the low cam profile is designed for low RPM economy, and not high RPM efficiency, so it starts losing power at around 5500 rpm, then the high cam kicks in that has all the high RPM performance.

although honda may have timed this kick in a little late, which is why there is the drop off. this may have been for MPG ratings as much as the feel (maybe the EPA shifts at 5k)
