A question of driving
In an Si, if you're at a stoplight next to an AT Civic Coupe and the light turns green, would you be able to keep up with it while not revving past 4K RPM in any gear AND accelerate smoothly?
I can't. At least not smoothly, because I have to wait that extra second for the RPM's to drop if I want to accelerate smoothly. I feel like 1st and 2nd are too short, as i can't get a nice "pull" until 3rd gear. 4th and 5th are extremely close (yes, I know, it's supposed to be a close-ratio gearbox), evidenced by the manual's recommendation to stay in 4th for only 5 mph. Seriously, who stays in any one gear for only 5 mph? I'm just starting to get into cars with this Si, so I don't have much experience. If I'm talking out of my ass, please correct me. If you have any driving/shifting tips, that would be greatly appreciated * I picked 4K RPM because that roughly corresponds with the manual's recommended shift points during "general driving". i haven't driven the Si yet but i've been behind the wheel of a few manual transmission vehicles and honestly i feel that the higher i go in the RPM range to shift the smoother the ride is.. in my car if im not accelerating fast i can still get to about 5k and then shift to second or third and its always a much smoother shift than the lower RPM range..and if i'm not mistaken i believe the owners manual tells you how to shift for optimum gas mileage.. i'm not sure though, i'd have to check it out, why wouldn't you want to A) go past 4000 rpm and B) shift as smoothly as an automatic.. you bought the Si to RIP IT! ha.. if i had one i know i would.. i don't know if this helps..

i'm having trouble imagining this - if i wait to long for the RPM's to drop, i find it /harder/ to accelerate smoothly. the 'rev hang' that everyone hates so much actually gives me an extra second to get into the next gear and get on it, and stay in VTEC. but that's the way i drive; your mileage may vary, as they say.
