Test drove an SI today.

And all i can say is wow it was amazing! i cant drive stick,my dad drove the car and wow it was great hearing that K20Z3 open up and sing. How does the SI DOHC work? does one cam stay on for fuel economy and the other engages when hitting VTEC? anyways it was Fiji Blue 07 Coupe with only 17 miles on it! non navi. The MSRP was for 21K,there also was 3 used SI's on the lot and a lot of Sedans and Coupe EX,LX,DX models.

DOHCs are on at all time, one for exhaust and one for intake( i think), the design of the cams itself is the i-vtec system. But man good to hear you experiences, im tired of people test driving the si and critiqueing it like it should be a Porsche

So jon you coming joining the pimp club anytime soon?

Yeah, I had an 06 EX for 3 months, when this 06 NBP Si showed up at my buddies dealership. I immediately feel in love. Then I drove it and love turned quickly into LUST! I bought it the same night.

All I can say is learn to drive a stick, fast.

If you learn how a manual transmission works, and how the clutch works, and what you are doing by rev matching, releasing the accelerator, depressing the clutch, etc.... You will know how to drive stick in no time.

both cams work full time, VTEC just shifts onto a different set of lobes to adjust the car's timing and performance for high-rpm efficiency. get the si, it's worlds ahead of the ex.

side note - my car didn't see VTEC for the first time till after the 400 mile mark...heard it wasn't great to use VTEC until the piston rings have seated fully.

I've heard thats true, but I've also heard the engine is "broken in" at the factory enough so that hitting the second profile won't damage anything. I didn't want to risk it so I tried to drive conservatively for the first 600 miles. I took it to about 6000 RPM a couple times, but that was it. Once I hit 600 miles, it was on!

You do NOT need to know how to rev match when you first start driving manual. Work on trying to get smooth up shifts first, then the more complicated stuff later.

KISS - keep it simple, stupid! :P

To be fair, the only way you'll get smooth upshifts is to rev match. If you just disengage the clutch, shift, then re-engage, the car will jerk when the RPM's drop. Waiting a second before letting the clutch out is rev matching on an upshift, although it's definitely simpler for a beginner than rev matching on a downshift. Just ask me, I am one.

But yeah, rev matching is important but it's not the first thing you need to learn. Just worry about launching without stalling, and shifting without jerking the car too much, burning the clutch, or grinding any gears. After that, work on rev matching. After that, heal and toe might be nice. I haven't gotten there yet.

Do you stalk the dealership when the delivery truck drives in and pitch a tent next to the vehicle you want to buy? It was pretty difficult to find Si which had not been test driven by every salesman before being put on the lot. Now I would think that it's a bit easier, since most dealerships have had many on their lots by now and the excitement of the new model had worn a bit.
