Question How secure is the new Sivic?

How secure are our new Sivics? I'm curious because in the past Civics have been one of the most broken into car. Might be due to the fact that it's one of the most popular, so there are a lot out there.

1. )So our keys supposidivly have some chip or something that prevents un-authorized keys from starting the ignition. Does this mean the new Civic is "hot-wire" impervious?

2.) I get the impression our stereo's and our Nav systems won't work if removed from our cars. Is this correct?

I'm asking because I want to know if there is a huge reason to try to get some security or anti-theft device over and above the factory system? Anyone have a real and rational reason?
Post your thoughts please.

yes the keys have a chip in them that are read by the pcm so the car can start. yes again the radio/ navi will only work in our cars. you can get an alarm but it they what your car there going to take no matter what.

I think too that this is a major issue. There is an entire class of underground racers that steal your car just to have the engine for which they drop into a light weight integra or what ever car just for a one night race stand. You will not be able to deter these folks. Should there be available statistics on stolen Honda's for 2006 - I would like to see it!!!

Our cars have Immobilizer. That is the technology used on our ignition system and newer Honda/Acura cars. The chip is embedded on our key and it is programmed to matched the information on the Immobi system. A properly coded ignition key must be used in the ignition switch for the engine to start. If an improperly coded key (or other device) is used, the engine's starting circuit is disabled.

So they can still jack whatever you have in your car, just can't start it..

There are a lot of different opinions when it comes to Immobilizer. Some say it's effective but many will say it's all a hyped and barely works.

There has been two generations of Immobi. Our cars have Immobi Gen II. Supposedly better and more "secure".

Regarding the stereo, all they need is the "radio code" to get your stereo working. Radio codes is on a sticker that's usually placed on the glove compartment....

The current gen Civic is much more secure than the previous gen Civics, and a world of a difference compared to the 6thgen coupe Si.

The newest Civics have a chip ID with the key that has to match the ID in the ECU. Car thieves used to be able to find the chip ID, reprogram a master key and break in (eg 7thgen civics)--they won't be able to with the 8thgen. When replacing a key you also have to replace the chip in the car, so it's a lot more secure (and pricey if you ever lose a key).

Of course, this won't stop people from taking a flat bed and taking it away, but I doubt most car thieves would go through that trouble and visual scrutiny for a Si.

All this technology to me seems worthless. Chances are if you car is stolen it will end up on the back of a flatbed truck. If you have the stock alarm it probably won't even go off. My car has lo-jack and a nearly impossible to get to battery backed up siren.

If they want it, they will take it. Lo-Jack is a joke (It is "hidden." Yeah, look under the rear seat).

Maybe the best defense is to hide in plain sight. I shaved all the emblems and decals off my Si sedan.

there is a guy that works at a local best buy and he locks his car up with the classic "club" and a boot (like police put on the car)...it is an older civic hatchback but he must really think people are after his car. i sometimes wonder how long he spends in the parking lot locking his car up....

you could always go for a setup like that and then they cant even get the car onto a flatbed to tow it away.

Well I paid the extra for the Lo-Jack, they said research shows 99% of the time your car is returned within 2 hours, seems like a good thing.

But then, don't they give your car a salvage title due to theft? I have a question. Will installing an aftermarket alarm system void your warranty? I just wanted to know this because honda might get at you for anything you do to your car. thanks.

Which lo-jack? Basic, EWS? If your car is hauled and you don't notice it for a while, it can have been taken outside of the coverage area fairly quickly depending on where you live. Hopefully you have the EWS Lo-Jack. That way, if the car starts to move (towed or not) without your RFID tag present it will automatically notify lo-jack, who will then contact you. With the basic Lo-jack system, you have to first notice you car is missing, then contact lo-jack to get the ball rolling.

Bottom line... if they want your ride, they'll take it. All stopgap measures can be removed/defeated rather quickly.

Low Jack is a joke cuz it is only good if your local Police Department that has the tracking devices. Here in Anne Arundel County none of the county cars have it and the barrack for the State Police up the street only has one police car that has the tracking unit in it (my best friends). So if that one trooper isn't working then your screwed. The unit looks like a TomTom Navi unit that is position in the front window and when activated it just points to the direction of the stolen car with arrows. IMO waste of money.
