Heh, barring setting you in the car for a road trip with a SG owner, I don't think there is a feasible way to 'prove' claims made herein. I don't think anyone would want to watch a 5+ hour video of a 52mph flatlands drive
![]() . . . . And someone would then claim it was chopped anyway. |

Car and Driver's Si test car over an extended period of time has gotten a 24.8 mpg average which seems pretty normal. I am sure they didn't coast their car and went 52mph in Kansas . I guess if you want to drive your car like an 85 year old Postal Worker, then I say go for it

Lol, Tom. I think there is a very divergent view here. I certainly do NOT drive my car like that at all times. As I have said in several places herein, it is what it is capable of when experimenting with driving styles when using active feedback from a scantool.
I also do not think that the other scantool users who have reported high MPG drive that way at all time (though I could be wrong...). As I reported elsewhere in this thread, when driving 'normally' I average about 27mpg (which is my polling response for the listed poll for this thread). This is up from 25ish by moderating my freeway speeds a bit (or rather, instead of driving 85, toning it down a bit). The mid-30s numbers are principally when experimenting on 'what it can do' (road trips, or a few fills in a row playing around with the stats from the scantool for half a day on a few weekends). I also Auto-X for fun. I just like playing with the car and since I did not buy it to be my daily driver (I've got a corral of other vehicles for that) but to be a 'play' car, that's what I do, perhaps to both extremes. At the end of the day, as I have said before, driving the car in 6th at 52mph is not normal in any way (or 5th at about 40mph returns about the same MPG). Just driving about in the car like a normal human actually driving at a reasonable speed, and leaving a stoplight faster than a wheelchair bound grandmother, will certainly give you much more 'normal' returns. I certainly do not advocate folks to drive in that manner normally...it really makes other drivers mad (and may make you 'mad' as well, if exposed to it for long periods of time)

More MPG antics:
Weekend trip to Mesquite, 202 miles round trip. Mostly flat with roughly 400' of elevation change from Vegas to Mesquite (down). 55mph, 6th gear, cruise for 95% of drive. No passing or hard acceleration. Tires at 36psi front, 33psi rear (over inflated). Fill-to-Mesquite-Fill in Vegas (about 10-12 miles of 'in town' driving' total, for trip), about 75F with ~10mph tail winds on outbound leg, 15mph headwinds on return leg. Had to slow down and deal with some big rigs coming back into Vegas, which probably lowered the MPG a tad. I'll try again next time I go to Mesquite for a 'clean' run. 40.7mpg. SG logged 41.4mpg (1.7% variance) NHP actually got in behind me for a few miles (probably wondering why I was driving so slow...), but decided not to pull me over. If I'd actually stuck with my 52mph benchmark I think I would have been pulled over. lol. Don't try this at home. The boredom factor has been rated 'severe' by the Surgeon General's office. |

I average about 28mpg with 50/50 highway/city driving. I would get better if i didn't feel the need to vtec so often
![]() All highway using cruise control at about 55mph, I got 34.9mpg I even took a picture of my tripometer cuz it was over 350miles lol I'll have to post that up later... I was just impressed my Si broke 350mi on one tank and only needed like 10 gallons to fill it up ![]() I have recorded every tank of gas since i got the car over a year ago... I keep it all in an excel spreadsheet so i can track my milage and stuff. dont ask, i'm wierd :P

80% of my driving is around town is a "spirited fashion". im not gonna lie, i drive by the philosiphy of "vtec is in my car for a reason, why not use it". that being said i have 2200 miles on my si, and have only gotten one tank over 20 mpg the rest being in the 17-19 mpg range.

17-19 is the gas mileage I have gotten with my 2000 Mustang GT. Heck, my brother in his 135000 Mile Grand Marquis gets 20-21mpg average. You do realize your car has more than 3 gears, right

i cant get better than 22mpg for some reason. i tried shell and bp and its the same thing. its not that i cant avoid vtec, but driving in the city is aggravating and when i get out of traffic i just floor it but for a full tank i hit vtec like twice and my gas mileage is the same. i freakin want better gas mileage. anybody notice a difference in gas mileage after the first oil change? i have about 1k on my fa5 right now.

I usually just write down the number on the trip meter, after resetting it from the last time I filled the tank. Then reset the trip meter before driving away from the pump.
Miles traveled / gallons filled = MPG So far around 21-25, very spirited 40 city/60 hwy, at around 1500 miles traveled so far. |
