Forum Complaining

I have had my 2007 Si for about 2 months now and i have been reading these forums for awhile. I had the EP3 Si and this car is FOUR times that car. It is not a perfect car but it is pretty darn amazing and better than a lot of other cars on the road. I just get disappointed to see people complain about little stuff and worry SO much. We have awesome cars!!!!

EXAMPLE: My buddy with a Saturn 2004 Ion Redline(nice car) has been without his car for 3 weeks now because his 20,000 mile transmission was ruined! Not his fault either (he is a good 5-speed driver...)!!!

Some people like to be picky. It's not that they don't like their car. Otherwise, they would have taken it back. Granted, some people have had some serious issues with their car.

I definately agree. I am not intending to say everyone is wrong but simply that sometimes the problem can exist more within someone's attitudes towards something, not with the object itself. There seems to be a paranoia now with this car and waiting for the smallest thing to go wrong. Thats what I did when I first got it, now I just try to have fun and leave it at that.

You also need to remember that when making a car purchase (not small by any means) you expect it to be perfect. You expect panels to fit exactly, no strange noise or vibrations, etc. I hear a lot of customer complaints through my dad who is a Honda service advisor. Some of the things are just down right stupid, but you don't expect anything less than perfect with a new Honda/Toyota.

My biggest issue is that I am, truly, disappointed in the revered "Honda quality", because I truly am not seeing it compared to the domestics I've owned, truth be told.

But I am overall happy with my car.

Keep in mind that any webforum like this one is going to present you a very skewed picture...that's simply its nature. Consider:

In my line of work, we fix certain high-profile, public "problems." (No, I'm not a hitman...something endlessly more boring that I won't discuss due to general policy of net-identity paranoia, but think "insurance agent" to get an idea of how "fun" this is.) 90% of the press we get is negative. Why? It's not because we deserve it, or the media sucks or hates us. It's because when we do our work well, nothing happens. Thus, no one shows up with TV cameras and excited reporters to do a live broadcast of the nothing that is happening. When you further consider that negative facts carry roughly three times the psychological weight as positive facts, you can see why the news trends negative, especially in our case.

The same principles apply here. True, you will get the "fanboy effect" of Civic devotees defending their beloved steeds to the last. But how many threads do you see started by those fanboys about all the wonderful happy warm-fuzzy good things about their cars? Well, here of all places you certainly see some, but not THAT many. But when I have a problem with my Si, like the 2nd-to-3rd crunch or the bucking/surging problem, where's the first place I'm going to go to ask for information, help, and just plain complain? Here, of course! So you should expect to see many threads about problems.

Thus, don't read too much into the threads you see here. They are useful for identifying real problems with the vehicles, but they aren't remotely representative of the entire population of Civics. A car (or other product) should never be judged by its forum/usergroup/mailing list/etc. If there's a lot of complaining, that's because this is the place for complaining.

I love my Si, I really do.

It's the best handling car I've ever had the pleasure to even take a ride in, let alone own. The sound of the engine is intoxicating, and it pulls pretty good as well. I love the layout of the dash, I love the seats, all the little interior touches that set it apart from the competition.

I do reserve the right to point out a few things that drive me nuts. The exterior paint/clearcoat thickness is not acceptable as even mild road debris will chip the paint right to the metal. The rattles I've experienced on the interior are very frustrating (you try driving 3 hours straight on the highway with a constant fast clicking noise coming from the a-pillar beside your ear). 3rd gear can be a bit tricky until the car has warmed up. Drive by wire throttle is not perfect, and with a very responsive car with a high strung engine, like the Si, not being able to modulate the throttle often results in the car bucking and making the ride far more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

I still wouldn't take any other new car at the price I paid for it.

Slight correction: First line; the word "prevent"... you meant "present", to achieve the proper meaning here. You could also say: "present you with." Not trying to be smart-ass, but this also looks like one of those sentences where a spell checker probably would not catch the error. I think your entire statement here is pretty much on the mark.

Good catch. I usually don't run the spellchecker, though. It's the sort of mistake I make when I'm typing fast and not paying lots of attention to the screen. Part of my brain says "present," but the part responsible for controlling my typing fingers says "p-r-e-ahaokayprevent!good!nextword!"

I agree 100%. I came from a big, heavy chevy! (rhymes!) It was big and very slooooooow! This SI is a dream come true. :) Especially everytime I shift into 3rd and scratch.

My roomie has a fully custom Z06 (`02) and when he drove my SI, he was very impressed with the bang for the buck.

0-60 in 3.9 seconds? The funny thing is, that number is when they are bone stock. This thing is BAD. (I get neck strain when I'm not looking forward when he gets on it.)

The thing about forum complaining that people need to realize is that it's going to happen.

It's happened on every forum I've ever been on. You can bet it happens on every car forum, regardless of make or model. Cars are machines, and nothing more. They are subject to flaws, cheapness, and corner-cutting, even if we don't want to admit it. People have varying degrees of what bugs them.

I, for example, expect no rattles on a brand new car. I don't expect big recalls either. I expect high quality, all around. Civic or not. The paint on the Civic is a huge disappointment, and so is the easy-wearing of the carpet and seats, along with the super easy-to-scratch plastic interior. Aside from that, it's a great car.

But the thing is, people who own a car, despite loving it, are going to have beefs with it; this is the case for every car forum I've ever been on.

Prospective buyers come and join the site looking for information on the car, and they get freaked out when they see that the car has flaws. Most people on a car forum will tell you how amazing the car is, and how flawless it is, but a growing amount of us are willing to tell what some of the negatives are, after having owned it.

It's just a fact of owning a car, not just a Civic, but any car.

Just my .02.

(btw: gorgeous corvette)
