Getting pulled over for speeding in another state...

I was in Jersey today and am from NY. I got pulled over for doing 53 in a 25. I have a clean license, and was extremely polite to the officer and he was as well, but he gave me a ticket regardless. I did deserve it due to my speed, but I was in an unfamiliar area and the speed limit drops drastically at some point.

Anyway, the price of my ticket isn't listed on the back of it and so I guess that means I need to appear in court, but wasn't given a date. I'm going to call tomorrow to see what the story is. I have a few questions though: I'm going to plead not guilty, which to me feels ridiculous because I was so far over the speed limit, but I can't afford what could be 6 pts on my license because I work for FedEx and could possibly lose my job.

Also, this is the first time I've ever been pulled over for speeding, so do you think the judge will be lenient? I don't know what the courts are like in Newark. Do you think they'll knock it down to something else because I'm not from there? Do points transfer from getting pulled over in one state, when you're from another? I heard from a few people that they didn't.

Any advice on any of this would be greatly appreciated. Also, I wasn't sure where to put this, but since I drive an Si, I put it in here. Feel free to move it. Thanks.

Assuming you're 18 or over, just call the courthouse or go online if that option is available. If you call, they'll tell you how much you owe and you can just pay it and be done with it.

If you can go online, they'll tell you how much you owe there and you can just pay it online.

Are you sure it was just speeding? 53 in a 25 would be reckless driving in most places, in which case, yes you'd have to appear in court since that's a misdemeanor.

no im kind of sure that the points dont get transfered from state to state due to the fact that each state has different laws but you are getting the ticket and fined for it

Yea, it was written as speeding, but no date was listed. I'm 25. I read from a few websites that they do get transferred, but then my friend was looking it up for me because he works with me and said that what he read said that it doesn't get transferred.

I think I need to appear in court, but no date is given, so I'll call tomorrow. I'm getting more and more nervous the more I think about it.

They do, in this case NJ would notify NY of the OP's driving conviction and NY would then penalize the OP with points according to their own structure.

If they didn't...I'd have little incentive to drive the speed limit in other states.

I know folks who've gotten speeding tickets in other states, they're all the same. It's just a traffic violation, so it's prepaid-able. You only have to appear in court if you're charged with a misdemeanor or felony.

In VA, fines aren't printed on the ticket either, you have to call or go online for ticket fines.

I'll probably go anyway if I'm going to fight it. The top of the ticket said I need to appear there, but like I said, no date was given, so I guess it's an option. 6 pts would kill my insurance and potentially hurt my job, so I'll probably go in and see.

states can add points to your licenses for out of state violations but they don't really bother will just speeding tickets, they are more focused on DUI's and reckless driving (20+mph over) and other more serious offenses. I've gotten a ticket in VA before and im from FL and i was told all this by a lawyer.

I live in Washington State, so I don't know how it works back there. However, my next door neighbor is a Traffic Court Judge. He's told me many times, anyone who shows up for court---with a good attitude, has a great chance of at least a reduction of the fine. If you don't go to court, no chance of a reduction or dismissal!

you usually have the option to pay the ticket at your local court but that means you have to pay a court fee for the county where you were pulled over and your local county court (just a dumb rule to steal more of your money). also usually you dont get to fight it they just give you the option to take a Speeding class that will remove the ticket and any points off your licenses

Guys, please relax with the arguing. I'm just looking for some answers and don't want the thread all mashed up with responses and insults.

Again, I'm hearing conflicting stories. I actually deliver to the DMV near me, so hopefully I'll get something for them tomorrow and can get the inside scoop and maybe see if they'll be able to do anything for me because they like me a lot and if I need something done, I go to the back, away from the lines and all that.

I was 20+ over the speed limit, so that is what's worrying me most.

I'm stupid? You're the one who can't read.

Anyway, back to topic, the 20 over thing is weird since that would be reckless driving (at least in VA). I'd verify that it is just a speeding ticket then go from there.

You can plead no contest, which is neither guilty or not guilty. they just want to hit you for money. Sometimes you can call the D.A. for the state and work it out over the phone, then they will just mail you the fine. Try that.

Exactly what I was thinking. I just hope I'm not required to go, because that won't really work in my favor since I needed to be there.

I got another ticket for driving into a bus lane near Penn Station in Jersey when I was picking up my sister. I really have no luck. The officer was nice enough to reduce it to something else that wasn't a moving violation. All of this makes me sound like a wreckless/careless driver, but I'm really not. There was just a lot of confusion in picking her up, so I would up going into the wrong lane. I paid that ticket online and they charged me an extra $2.50 for something on top of the $85 ticket.

Apologies if the word "comprehension" has too many syllabus for you to understand.

If you'd like I can word it in such a way that would be easier for you to swallow:

You suck at reading.

Better?

Here's my $0.02. I live in CA so the laws might be slightly different. You will have the option to pay the ticket and go to traffic school, however being that you were doing 23 over the speed limit you might have to go to court. In my previous traffic court experiences just showing up, dressing and acting professionally shows some class and the judge will usually lower your fine and offer you traffic school if you choose to take it. It is also a possibility that the ticketing officer doesn't show and you get off scott free! I think I remember hearing that it was about 20% of the time the ticketing officer doesn't show. Either way this ticket isn't going to show up on your record, so the only thing you should be worried about is the fine.
