I do not have a "third gear problem", but I can see that when shifting into third gear, I have to do so assuredly. If I do it in a half-hearted manner, it will not be solidly engaged, and could possibly pop out. I only have 1200+ miles, and maybe things will change. However, my shifting is going very well so far.

I actually never really had a problem either with third gear...I now have over 12K on my car and it just begun popping out of 3rd gear, only when I do not solidly engage the gear. I would not say it is a third gear problem...... you just cannot half arse it.

yeah mines use to do it, you would put it in to 3rd and as soon as you would start letting go of the stick it pops back out and it grinds your gears. but it only did it when it was cold and ever since ive change the tranny fluid to full synthetic it doesnt do it anymore.

I don't have any problems with 3rd gear. Goes in nice and smooth. I have, however, noticed that some gears do want to "pop" out of gear sometimes. Usually happens in the morning with colder weather. Just this morning, I shifted into 2nd, or at least I thought I did. And like was already mentioned, the shifter did not fully engage, and came out. Fortunately, I had not released the clutch, and did not grind the gear.

Rarely happens though. This was the first time in I'd say a year that this had happened.

Since I know that this sometimes is an issue with our transmissions, I usually warm up the shifter while the car is warming up in the morning... Clutch all the way in, and I go through all the gears a few times... Seems to make the gearbox a little smoother... but I don't know

if so many ppl are having the problem, maybe it DOES have something to do with the car.

When i first picked up my SI, 3rd gear was butter smooth. After experiencing some sub freezing temperatures, i had 3rd gear pop out on me once, and has ever since been "notchy" or "crunchy" as someone else described it.

I've tried a bunch of ways to get around this. some random observations...

1) It actually seems to smooth out after heavy rain. (anyone else notice this????)

2) it's a little bit better if you go a) up into neutral and then b) up and LEFT a bit.

3) if you "push" the shift knob from behind, as opposed to pulling it with your hand over the shift knob (i got the idea to try this, because i heard a lot of ppl with short shifters say it smooths out third gear).

4) from what others said, getting a short shifting and new bushings smooths out third gear.

5) again, from what others have said, changing to synthetic MTF helps i hear.

I also heard that a lot of SI's MTF was overflowed at the factory and that might have something to do with it.

This is a really ignorant thing to say. A very significant number of people have problems with third gear when all other gears are fine. Some people are new to driving stick, some have been doing it for decades. Besides, other Hondas are known for 3rd gear issues. I've read about it on the RSX and S2000. Your car may not have a problem, that doesn't mean no one's car does.

There are MANY other threads about notchiness and grinding with third gear. Lots of people have gotten a short shifter, bushings, or new MTF and have posted about positive results. I just did a search for the word "grind" and look at all the threads it came up with. Sift through those if you want specific examples.

I just ordered Amsoil MTF the other day. I'll post my results once I swap out the Honda MTF.

its ok... ive invented some cool shifting motions since the shift from 2nd to 3rd is so exacting... i kinda like it; it requires me to be more fancy
