Horsepower from synthetic ?
Has anyone tried Royal Purple synthetic oil? I was watching Horsepower TV and they did a tour of their plant, and they stated you can get more horsepower from your engine when you use their product. Any Royal Purple users out there?

I use royal purple in my ex coupe. I can't say that i noticed any horse power gains. If there were any it would be fairly minimal, probably 1-3hp if any. I went with royal purple cause I saw it boosted MPG in one of the tests. From all the info I've read on here and other sites I would just some up that synthetic in general ,whether it's RP, redline, or mobile1, is good for increased wear resistance and longer change intervals. My oil life meter consistently goes beyond 5k miles per oil change. I'm at 4.9k and the meter still reads 40%.

it is regulated by the thermostat, but say your reved the engine real hard for a bit. If the synthetic oil reduced friction more less heat would build up.... so the average temperature would be lower.
just to get back on track, this has nothing to do with increasing horsepower. Until someone does a dyno test with all the oils with the same car under the same conditions I'll say that the hp gains from oil are almost negligible |

OK.. if it's the same viscosity as other oils (hence being rated the same).. ... umm.. how does that make any more power? Sounds like some marketing guys had a field day... does it also make you breakfast?

My question I hope is related to this thread so I hope it's OK. I purchased my 06 EX Coupe with 8,200 miles. It now has a meter reading of 40% with 9,500 miles. Can anyone tell me how I can tell the kind of oil the previous owner used before I change the oil or does it matter.

If you're at 40% at 9500, it's probably been changed once, so you're probably OK waiting a while. If it were me, I'd change it now just so I'd know for sure what's in there and how long it's been there. Don't forget the filter. |
