Passanger Airbag Light (PS airbag off)

This hasn't happened that often, but once in awhile when I turn my car on the passagner airbag light says the airbag is OFF. Has this happened to anyone? Is this just a quirk with the car or might there be something wrong. Hasn't happened a lot, maybe 3-4 times in the past 3 months, but it is kinda odd.

Was anybody sitting there, or did you have something resting on it?

If it thinks there's a kid sitting there it'll disengage the airbag - so a bookbag or something sitting on the seat might be mistaken as a 3 month old baby in a carseat, etc.

I think it actually weighs what's on the seat, but I'm not 100% sure about that or what the cut-off point would be for deactivating the airbag.

Do you have anything on your seat when you turn the car off, or on? Usually, I have my backpack on my seat and the light will stay on since it doesn't weigh the required 80 or so pounds that is the weight restriction. This is a safety device, I guess, so the airbag doesn't kill a small child in the front seat.

Yea, I didn't realize that if I had something on the seat it would stay on. If I do remember I had my gym bag on the seat each time. As a test Ill put my bag on the seat after work and see if the light stays on.

Thanks guys!

It's called OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System). Sensors under the seat determine the weight and position of the object. If it's under 65 lbs, or is out of position (as in a passenger snoozing against the window), then it disarms the side airbags to prevent injury to the child or adult out of position.

In the case of a package or gym bag, it also prevents those becoming a missile shooting at the driver during deployment of the side airbag.

When my daughter sits on the seat without leaning on the door, the light stays off (airbag activated), but when she leans against the door, the light comes on (airbag deactaivated). I think she weighs around 100lbs, so I assume the cutoff to be right around there.
