Finally!! Honda fixin 3rd gear crunch

I know there's multiple threads about this, but decided to make a new one since I feel it's worth the great news.

Honda is fixing my transmission! Finally!

Technician specializing in trannys took my car home, and found the grinding problem I've been describing. I'm going to get a call from the dealership--they'll either replace the syncromesh (which was my guess of what was wrong), or replace the whole transmission itself.

I'm so happy--this is the 4th time taking it to the dealership. Three times they drove the car and said nothing was wrong. They even took it home another time. I wasn't about to bandaid the solution with GM tranny fluid or a short shifter, so this is awesome. For others wanting it fixed, I suggest taking it to a dealership with a great service department. Berkeley Honda has been very nice and respectful--Oakland on the other hand kept blowing me off. If they can, have them drive it home (if you're comfortable with that sort of thing).

Edit: It's fixed, 3rd gear is buttery smooth. Gonna be joyriding a bit to see if it's gone for good :-)

That's awesome. But I am scared of letting Honda "test" for a notch/cruch/grind on my tranny. They are purposely trying to grind my tranny? And they will most certainly blow it off like it's no problem afterwards? That's unnecessary wear on my car and that scares me...maybe I"ll wait for a TSB or recall...

Not really trying to grind it...just trying to observe the same problem we've been having.

Now I'm really encouraged, way to go, aki! Now I just need to decide if I should wait on this until the warranty's near gone.

Is this a serious problem with all civicSi's? Im getting an 07 si and keep hearing that theres a problem with 3rd gear. This troubles me thinking about a new car with gear problems..

Heck, if they break the tranny I'd be happy too, cus' then the problem can be replicated. Plus the K20's a strong engine, and I'm not worried that he'll screw up the car quickly. I think it depends on whether you trust that dealership too. The guy drivin my car specializes in transmissions, so I'm sure he's not going to misshift from 6th to 2nd.

I'll be calling them later this afternoon to see what Honda's going to do. This 3rd gear problem has plagued my car from the very beginning (actually from the first test drive).

I wouldn't worry about that. As reported in another thread, this doesn't seem to be an indicator of overall transmission problems or low reliability, and is apparently known in S2000s as well. It's just a quirk--in some of these 6-speed transmissions, something tends to not quite slide out of the way in the transmission properly, making 3rd harder to engage on occasion. Perhaps a part is improperly installed on occasion, or by a guy in the plant with frequent hangovers.

At any rate, as it stands it seems that most of them don't have the problem. I have the problem and am still happy with the car, and as discussed here, it looks like Honda will fix it if you have it. So I'll be happy to put up with it for a few years in the hope that when I DO take it in to be fixed, they'll just replace/rebuild the tranny anyway, and thus I'll have a new transmission in my now-older car (that should be an indicator of how little it annoys me...yet).

Of course, if you think it would bug you a lot more...(shrug). Certainly it's bugged two forum members enough to harass their dealers at length over the problem until they fixed it. Your mileage may vary...

Talked to the dealership, apparently they're ordering a new 3rd gear syncromesh (aha! I told em so =P). Takin my car back, but will bring it back in when they get the part in.

It can't hurt to call them. At least that way, if they don't know about it yet, they will now. Let us know what you find out if you do decide to call them.

I already did that before taking it to dealership =P They tell you that the dealership will handle it, and that without any TSBs or recalls there's not much they can do.

Hmmm, not sure what you mean by having TSB done. Well grinding 3rd gear ain't normal, but unless mechanics catch your car in the act of grinding it'd be hard to convince them to replace the syncromesh/tranny.

Heh now all we need is someone to find the 2nd gear grind when you shift at ultra racer mode speed! =P My shop foreman found it but he choose to let it ride and just note it for me so incase my tranny blows up I am covered

W00t!

Got my car back from the dealership, and so far the 3rd gear is buttery smoooth. Need to drive for another week to be sure, but man so far it's promising. I can't tell you how liberating this is--since the very first time I had the car I dreaded going into third gear, and so far it goes in as effortlessly as with the other gears. Well worth all the times I dragged myself back to the dealer.

Glad I didn't settle for swapping tranny fluid.
