RPM's @ 70MPH????

I've been de-clunkered with a Shiney red SI Sedan......
I've noticed the RPM a little high going 70MPH, is this normal for the SI?

I'm in Catonsville, MD........

A bit over 3k RPM... Yeah, that's normal. It freaked me out the first time too. I've got a highway in my area with a high speed limit... I thought my car was gonna blow up.

It's fine.

As in 3100 rpm? Considering these engines redline @ 8,000 rpm that's about right. Would be nice if they sat at around 2,000 rpm @ 70, but these babies don't have sufficient torque. Oh, enjoy your Si !! Much better than a clunker any day!

Mine is ~3000rpm at 70mph which can be considered normal for a car that revs to 8000rpm

even the base Civics are in the 3000 range at 70mph.

I believe the Auto civics run a little lower, and I know my CR-V is in the 2200 range, but that's got another 20+ lb-ft of torque to help it along.

the first time I ever hit seventy in my SI was on the way to work at 4:30 in the morning and I thought I couldn't get into sixth cause the RPM was so much higher than I was used to. It dawned on me an the way home when I was a little more awake.

3100RPM is fine. Mine fresh off the lot pulls that. Oh, and my 1995 EX pulls exactly the same RPM at highway speed.

it's alllll about the gearing my friend. 3rd gear in some of my other cars used to take me to around 90ish. the SI redlines at agbout 75ish in 3rd.

why is everyone always wishing the rpm's were lower while on the high way? even at 3,000 your only a lil more then a 3rd of the way to red line, that's great! i know people that are at the same rpm at the same speed but red line at a much lower rpm. plus cruising at 3,000+ i get over 30 mpg. that is better then most of the cars on the highway with us guys.

Considering all the different factors associated with this statement, i'm going to just assume you know nothing about cars.

Things like torque curves and load and efficiency of burn are all factors to this statement. If you go right around 65-70 though, with an aftermarket tuning solution you can easily get 38+ mpg.

MT R18 sits at ~3000 at 70mph but I know 80mph is exactly 3500rpm. so it's not so bad for cruising.
