Interesting Encounter with Old Guy

I'll try to make this short, i just found this to be interesting. So I left the gym and headed for Whole Foods to pick up some food, which is in the town next to me so its like a 10min drive. I pull into Whole Foods and the parking lot is packed, so I goto turn around and this old guy in a maxima signals me to turn down my music. I thought he was going to say that I was driving too fast or my music was too loud or something. But, he asked how I liked my car. I said "I love it" and he preceeded to ask me all these questions like how much it was, what options I had on it, how it drives, etc. Turns out he was shopping around for cars and he wanted to buy the SI. The funny thing is, the guy is 73! When he said he wanted to buy one i was like "Hell Yea! Definatly pick one up!" He said he followed me from Paramus(my town) JUST to ask me about the car.

I just thought that it was cool that he was 73, yet he was still young at heart ya know? Many people when they get older change their mindset and, for a lack of better words, "act older". I know that this guy is just a picture of what Im gunna be like when I get older, 73 and still rockin the SI!

The cool folks stay young. They realize that age is what you make of it. One of the shops I went to down in Norfolk maintains a turbo's '92 Dodge Colt with a Mitsu motor, coilovers, roll cage, nitrous, yada yada yada. I asked about the owner they told me ,no sh*t, a 72 year old guy owns it and he races it at one of the tracks somewhere the area. Now that's one kick ass grandpa.

Look at Paul Newman, David Letterman, Jay Leno, etc. Just because your odometer shows a lot of miles, doesn't mean you're done doing burnouts. I know some young people who act like an "old people."

Same thing happenend to me outside a buddies house. Dude was 68 and had just bought an Element, but had looked hard at the Si first. He came over & asked if he could look under the hood & wanted to know whats mods were done & what else I planned on doing to it.

I'm thinking that if you're someone who has had a love of nice cars since you were young (like me) it is something that stays a part of you throughout your entire life. Definitely has with me.

My uncle is about to turn 60 this year and all he ever asks me about when he sees me these days is how my Si is treating me. So, I always take him for a drive and he tells me about some of the cars he used to own and drive back in the day.

Long story short, his favorite was a '57 Chevy he owned back in the day...he's currently my favorite relative!

I'm one of those "old guys"...at least on paper.
I've had many coupes since '67. Ten to be exact. Once a car guy, always a car guy. My Dad bought a '66 Ford Mustang just before my 16th birthday and said, "Son, if your gonna' to be irrational about something let it be cars and not women." I got to drive it on the "once a week rule."
I ordered a '07 Habanero Si last Saturday, ...first week in October if no shipping delays!!!

My son turns 16 in December. He's been learning to drive on mom's Accord auto and my '90 Toyota 4X4, 206,000 miles. Just sold that two weeks ago. Been shopping around. He thinks I've ordered a Toyota Prius. The sad look on his face.....priceless. "That's nice, Dad. What color did you finally decide to get?" 3.75 student, plays in the band, braces come off November and he's on the golf team. A good kid and I trust him. Can't wait for the driveway surprise....look what Dad drove home tonight!!! The kid has to learn about irrational things sometime. Right? And the once a week rule....I'm 56 and still car crazy after all these years.

I'm 56 and have had my GG SI since Feb. Have 2 kids in college who drive their own Honda's and it was my wife who told me get a car that was fun. After test driving the Mustang GT, Mini Cooper S, Z, and the Subbie it was game, set, match after test driving the SI. The most fun and capable car I've driven in a long time. And hey its a Honda and for 20 grand its a steal.

Bravo Cybergypsy! I'm a guy of 45 and feel confident enough to challenge most on a closed road race. There's something to be said for experience. About 10 years ago I was having fun racing karts while living in Germany. Most of the competitors were about half my age. I out weighed most by several pounds. Big disadvantage in karts. At the end of the day, many were gracious enough to come over and apologize for doubts about an old dude racing with them. They could certainly pull a few lengths in a straight but there are very few straights on a proper kart circuit. They could not touch me through the corners. Period. Was the same this past weekend. Took a gorgeous drive in the Si on some awesome country/forested back roads semi close to my home. A few times I had some other cars try to hang with me. Even had a gaggle of 4 Scion tCs try to tail me. No dice. Age and experience often wins out over youth and inexperience. Probably could have embarrassed them even more but I only have 1500 miles on my car and don't know it well enough to REALLY push it yet. As OHSiGuy stated; once it's in your blood, it's in your blood. Geezer's quote is spot on.

I am 51 years old and have owned over the last 5 years a TT Supra, Cobra mustang, c5 vette and STI. I go through cars quickly.

I now own M45 (Infiniti) and used 2002 M3.

Somone told me to test drive those new "ricer" cars because someone called it the poor man's BMW.

So I test drove 06 Si, never ever having driven a Honda in my life and not wanting too. I came back from the drive and ordered an 07 on the spot. The handling, why not quite like an M3, was razor sharp. The exhaust sound (I did not beat the tester so only took up to 5 grand) was fantastic. More importantly the entire experience was FUN. Reminded me of the experience I had when I first drove a BMW back in 1980-raw and fun.

The young folks have so many great HANDLING cars to choose from that I never had when I was 18 (1974). It is a great time to be young and old!!

You said it brother! But at the same time, we had to learn to really drive the cars back then. My coworkers '05 325i has so many traction/stability control features that it seems the car is driving him actually. LOL

True, but traction control has saved me a few times before.
