JerrfyLube: i wasn't debating the fact that synthetics last longer, i know that.

also i just wanted to state that my car is stock (airbox/filter, exhaust, etc.) and i use Synthetic oil in my car and i almost got to 5000 miles. i know with regular oil i'll be lucky to get to 3000.

well i know this was brought up alot but im still confused because i just changed my oil once it hit 20% and of course knowing that it would go back to 100% it didn't, it stayed at 20 and now that i've been driving for 4 days now it went down to 15%...

so ... help me out guys, wuts up with that?!?!

is it possible that the oil life wasn't reset... is there a button that im not pressing?!

last tym when i changed the oil for the first time on my si it resets back to 100%

Oil consumption and this engine breaking in sound typical to me. Everything is fine, the consumption should cease ONCE its finally settled in...mine started to stabilize somewhere between 6-8000 miles. Now it has ZERO consumption. Oils also shear pretty fast in this engine. Fuel dilution can also cause thinning but I doubt that's an issue on a new Si. If worried get some UOA's done.

any engine with real VTEC will have oil consumption b/c that's what the VTEC works on....

VTEC a lot = more oil consumption

I waited till 15% and it was 7,300 miles, used mobil1 first oil change, i will not worry about the longer oil change intervals with the synthetic oils.

I don't see why people ebitch about cars burning oil. It is a fact of life on all engines that it will burn oil to a certain degree.

The PCV valve will suck out oil vapors causing your engine to consume oil. If you go into VTEC alot, guess what, you are pressurizing the head and it puke out oil into your intake tract.

It is advisable to check your oil atleast once a week if you boost or VTEC alot. Otherwise every time you fill up will suffice. I do it and my cars always last longer than 10 years.

The oil consumption issue with the Si was discussed A LOT during the first year or so after the car came to market (Dec '05). Numerous owners here, at ToV, FGCoupe, etc. reported oil consumption issues prior to their first oil change. With feedback and history from the RSX groups, this was put down to 'normal for this car', more so with higher, extended use of hi-RPMs.

As to "real-world' oil life, the only method that gives a 'for certain' answer is a UOA with TBN. As many owners are put off by the cost and inconvenience of actually doing so, all the net speculation continues... That is too bad as that little bit of cost and effort can show you more than your oil life, it can actually be used to detect certain internal engine issues well before they would normally become apparent through normal driving.

And if you are a stats nerd, it helps control the OCD

I do UOA's regularly, and will be getting a TBN on the next (3rd) sample of my Si's oil.... due in about 2000 miles (6 weeks)

I also do them on my CR-V...

it does help with the OCD, though I strictly follow the MM and change at 15% with OEM fluids and a Mobil1 Filter.

also too not for anyone to worry these engines do run hot so untill that "engine gunk" has settled in it seems like your gonna lose alot of oil by it burning off. i have 23k on my 08 i check my oil every month and before longer drives, there is no consumption. ( i also hit vtec on every on-ramp and engine brake on every off ramp and i drive the highway every day)
