speeding ticket from another state

Has anyone gotten a speeding ticket from another state? What exactly happens? Do you pay the fine by mail or have to appear to court in person? Do you get points on your license even though its from another state? I plan on driving from New York to Florida and the last thing I want to do is go back to another state because of court. I don't speed but shit does happen. Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Get a lawyer who does traffic! My last ticket was out of state and I got a lawyer who got it reduced (the infraction, not the fine) and I paid by mail. Lawyer was $50.

I got pulled over doing 101 in Arizona on the 10. 85+ is criminal speeding in AZ so I was lucky not to get arrested. I got the pleasure of driving all the way back to AZ a month later to go to court and I waived my right to court and plead no contest. I got a $530 fine which I am still paying as they were kind enough to do a payment plan. They didn't mention anything about points, and I've heard from people with circumstances similar to mine that the court has to go through a lot of b/s and paper work to place points on an out of state license. I learned my lesson real quick from this though. I never break 72mph on the freeway in LA even when people behind me like to get horn happy.

Actually, in Arizona 20mph+ over the posted speed limit is covered by criminal statute, 19 and under is civil. Reckless driving as a 2nd criminal charge comes into play also, depending on speed and circumstances.

I know that states do share driving record info but I'm not sure how points transfer, if at all. My brother had his license suspended in Arizona but has one in Washington.

Yea I checked out the DMV website and wasn't clear if points were given or not. I'm just nervous cause for the past 2 months, there are so many cops out and I was pulled over 3 times for BS. 2 cops let me off on a warning for a loud exhaust even though its stock and the other gave me a ticket for 62 in a 60. New York cops. Gotta love em..

Will a speeding ticket from another state affect your auto insurance?
In: Tickets Points, and Auto Insurance Rates

Tickets in Other States

In general most US states belong to the Nonresident Violator Compact of 1977. This means that speeding tickets received out of your home state will be reported back to your home state and included on your record for drivers license and insurance points.

However there are certain states that do not put out of state traffic tickets on your record and others that will only enter speeding tickets that are over a certain mph above the speed limit.

Kansas, Wyoming, Minnesota, Arizona, Iowa, and South Dakota will not put a speeding ticket on record unless it is 10 or more mph over the limit. Georgia will not enter speeding tickets unless they are more than 14 mph over the limit. New York and Colorado will not enter out of state speeding tickets at all unless they are serious violations like reckless. Michigan also has special rules about out of state tickets.

You need to check with your own Department of Motor Vehicles to determine the regulations in your state. You obviously have recognized the importance of keeping any traffic violation off your record. Even one minor speeding ticket could increase your insurance premiums by as much as 25% for three years.

You should never just pay a speeding ticket. There are usually avenues available to keep the citation off your record or to reduce its impact on your insurance costs.

Now learn the really important lesson--get the @!%& out of the way. There's no inherent right to be in peoples' way, and you may some day find that if you get in the way of something that can hit you it may well do so. And your reasons simply don't matter.

You have no inherent right to make me break the law (assuming the speed limit is 70). The closer you ride my ass the slower I will go. If I slow down and you still don't pass me then whose the one causing the problems now?

As someone whose already gotten enough tickets to have to take driving classes. While trying to clean my act up there's not much that pisses me off more than someone bitching because I'm inconveniencing them by not breaking the law.

There's also no reason for a law abiding citizen to make room for someone that chooses to disobey those laws. It's not his job to make it convenient for you/us.

What *you* may find is that if someone chooses to take action against someone obeying the law, that person may suddenly find a reason not to remain that way. You never know what's in the box until you open it...and then it may be too late for you. That is the *real* important lesson.

speed limit is 65 on LA freeways, so technically at 72 i'm still speeding. So if i'm "in someones inherent way" of breaking the law then they can lick my hairy a$$ crack
