crusing speed rpm?

so im driving down the highway and i notice im crusing at 70 mph but im hovering around 3000 rpm. Is that normal?

if it is, then does that mean if we get the urge to go 80 down an empty highway our mpg goes to hell because we're at 4000 rpm constant?

It's a little over 3k for me, too. I was in a 2001 Accord the other weekend and it was a little over 2k on the highway.

Same here. There are sections of road on my semi-monthly 270 mile round trip commute where the speed limit is a constant 60 or 55 mph for extended stretches. I get phenominal fuel economy on those stretches. 3000rpm is just a little too high to spin the engine for optimal fuel economy.

Gear ratios. If 6th was geared low enough to cruise at 2250, there would be too dramatic of an rpm drop shifting from 5th to 6th.

Highway miles going around 65-70 average or so, I managed to get 34 mpg, but this is only constant highway miles tested on my last road trip.

Small engines need to rev higher on the highway because they lack the torque needed to run slower, also the Si revs higher than the R18 because it was designed for higher performance, so the gear ratios are shorter and closer togeather.

With bigger engines you can have taller gears, I had a 3.8 Sable that would turn about 2200 rpm's at 65 - 70.

You think the Si is bad, I used to have a 6 speed Wrangler.. Talk about crazy gear ratios.. I could start in 4th with no problem..

Anyway being close to i95 where cruising speed is generally 70+ your MPG does go to hell.. I just can't stand ALL those cars passing me when I'm in the slow lane..

That's pretty impressive! Glad to know that the SI doesnt need to be at 55mph to get 30+ mpg. With gas prices so high, getting 30+ mpg is a priority.

I wish I got 30 mpg. My 07 ex coupe got 30-32 but the civic usually gets around 23.. I did get 27 once. I do a lot of stop and go though, that's what kills me.

When cruising at 80mph I'm turning 3500rpm. Recent trip from NJ back to Nova cruising at 80 basically the whole way returned about 30mpg.
