weight of wheels

So, I'm trying to learn all I can about the HCH to make an informed purchase decision. Sometimes I think the wheels on it are horrible; other times they're growing on me and I think they're distinctive. My question: how much do these "lightweight" wheels weigh. Neither dealership nor Honda (800) has that information. What honda wheels will fit and what modifications may be necessary? Thanks!

Mike

they shouldn't be that lightweight... there's so much metal plating on the face to reduce drag. my guess is that they're in the mid-20 lb range.

wheelweights.net is great, however, much of the information is very dated. Sometimes it is hard to get weights for 'newer' wheels (even a few years old). Format sucks, but it is a great resource if you can actually find your wheel.

That said, the '06 Civic Hybrid wheel in not on the list. Too bad you couldn't have the old HX wheels! 11.8# each.

Somebody at www.greenhybrid.com weighed the wheels and tire combo and it was 34 lbs. I assume he had air in there also. But, the stock tire weighs about 18 lbs from tirerack. I changed mine out to 17s and hurt my fe by 8 mpg. I think it might have been the tires since I didn't get low rolling resistance tires. Maybe it was the design of the wheel and wasn't the most aerodynamic. After taking the 17s off for the winter and the stock ones back on there they have been growing on me.

Answered one of my questions. A parts guy at a local dealer was kind enough to weigh the rims- 17lbs.

so changing from 15" to 17" ... decrease the mileage alot ??
so wat is the weight of the rim ?
if i can find 16" with the similar weight to replace will it decrease the mileage ?

The reasons you lose mileage going up in rim size are these:

stock tire is 195/65/15 @ 18lbs, 5.6 inch tread width. What makes this a low rolling resistance tire is the tread width. About an inch less tread width than any other tires in that size. The sidewall flares out to give it the 195 section width specification.

*Most people go with 215/45/17's which have 2 inches more tread width which increases rolling resistance. An avg 215/45/17 tire weighs 21-24 lbs increasing the weight requiring more effort for the engine to motivate the car to move. Remember that the tire's weight is more important than the wheels weight due to its distance from the axis of rotation.

*also, the factory HCH II wheels weigh 16-17 lbs. If you are not careful, you will end up with a wheel that can weigh in the low to mid 20 lb range. It would be very easy for someone to end up with a wheel/tire combo that weighs north of 45lbs. if they go on looks alone. The increased weight per wheel, increased rolling resistance, and less aerodynamic design, not to mention that the offset can play a roll in the aero effect on mileage as well are all factors that can reduce fuel economy when changing out wheels/tires. If you do more city driving at lower speeds, aero effect has less of an impact.

I had some factory replica wheels on my Jetta that weighed 27 lbs a piece! I could feel the lack of acceleration when i put them on, and I lost 8-10% on my MPG when I switched from the stock 195/65/15's to the 225/45/17's on that car.

I've posted this in other areas but I've put 14.1 lb 17 inch wheels, and 18.2 lb tires on my civic EX to help increase acceleration and style of course. This is about the lightest you can go without shaving your tires and spending $500 a wheel to save that last pound.

I'm currently looking into replacing the HCH II wheels on my hybrid with some lighter 15 inch models under 10 lbs. Having trouble finding a good selection of lightweight wheels with the 5X114.3 bolt pattern.

I've been thinking about that as well. Did you do it? I know OrientExpress has, and states no change in MPG.

New wheels are on their way...I'll mount them up and will commute for a week to see what the effects are...

what did you end up getting? i have been going back and forth with what to get or stay stock. the "plate" wheels are growing on me. but, i have been through 17s and that is not the way to go. seems like 16s are the way to go if you want to go bigger. the prius offer 15s and 16s for it.

I'm picking these up...I believe they are closest in weight to the dish wheels and the tires that are mounted are only a bit wider (195 vs 205).

After a stint with some BBS RK's (18's), I think I will try to pick up some wheels from a different Honda/Acura to change up the look a bit (smaller for sure) in a few months. For those who didn't know, there's a thread in the Wheels section that shows various OEM wheels mounted on other Civics so you can get an idea of what to expect...at least those who are interested in other OEM wheels.

Here's a link:OEM Wheel Thread - Honda/Acura Rims on an 8th Gen
