The people at the gas station miss me
I purchased my 08 hybrid in May. I drive 140 miles round trip to work everyday and was getting 20 mpg in my Ford. I am proud to say I am now averaging 52 mpg per tank. My highest achieved mpg was 54.5 on a tank. I drive the speed limit,,,,just wonder if I can better this milegae by driving more conservative

1, everybody knows, or at least can find out with a little research, that no wing or spoiler on a car makes any difference in downforce below 60 MPH. 2, you can't draft or get a good slipstream effect at below 60 even behind a big rig. So while it of course it tapers off, not just magically happens when you cross 59 MPH, 60 and above seem to be the speeds at which significant drag and aerodynamic events take place. So it stands to reason that you'll get better gas mileage by going 60-ish or less. Also I made a trip from Atlanta to Akron in which I drove 60 there and 80+ back, and it saved me about a half a tank going slower. As for accelerating slower and wasting less energy by rolling through lights whenever possible (instead of rushing up to the light and taking off again) you'll do a lot better there too. Well, i've owned the car for a full year now, and my mileage for the whole year is:
37.8 mpg, or 6.2L/100km. This is definitely lower than i was hoping when I bought the car, but here are a few factors which I think contributed to it being so high: 1. Weather = Gets damn cold here in the winter. That means that the hybrid car isn't running at it fullest potential. Also I usually preheat my car for about 5 minutes before getting in when it's really cold, and idling like that that has a horrible effect on your mileage. 2. Lip kit / Spoiler = extra weight, and i doubt the spoiler is helping with my fuel economy at all. 3. Tires/Wheels = I dont even have my stock tires anymore. My stock wheels go with my winter tires which i imagine are a fair bit heavier than my stock tires. For summer I have 15lb Enkei wheels, and while that is lighter than the 17lb pie plate wheel, it is not as aerodynamic. Also the tires I use in the summer are BFG Sport tires, i imagine they weigh something nice and also increase friction. Overall, i've said it before and I'll say it again: Honda Civic hybrid not recommended for places that have seriously cold winters. |

I think that can be said of all hybrids and electric vehicles. They all need warming up.
Can you use a block heater? Also, as it gets really cold you might try blocking parts of your grille with something like pipe wrap and ties. |

Yeah i use the block heater in winter.
Blocking part of my grill eh? Like block the open parts behind the grill to keep the engine insulated? Is that the idea? Thx for the tips! |

^exactly...block the area behind the grill and the lower grill...hold in all the heat you can..
if you really wanted to go all out you might be able to improve aerodynamics if you could fabricated something flush with the grill top and bottom |

I have about 4000 miles on my Civic Hybrid....the worst tank so far was 40mpg...the best 48mpg...the mpg gauge is always off on the dash ..sometimes higher sometimes lower....I always top off my tank till it can't hold no more and figure out my milage by dividing the miles by the gallons it takes to fill up....usually I see 43-44...I don't really drive it any different than a regular car.....

I just got my best tank to date. 58.589 MPG. This was achieved by mainly going 55-60 MPH on my commute. I had 3 bars left on the fuel gauge and 656.2 miles on trip odometer and 11.199 gallons of gas. It would have definitely been better had the ac not been used. It's in the mid 80's right now so when the temps drop a bit I will see if I can get better. We haven't got our "winter blend" gas yet and that might affect the mileage too.

august was 44.2mpg october was best at 47.2mpg november ( new 09 ) was 42.3mpg ( ain't broke in yet typically after 20,000 miles you get 10% better than new ). Winter mileage drops badly until you engine reached full temp ( about 10 miles at 28 degrees ) This week with ice storm ( and ice on the roads ) I have only reached 28 mpg on a 4 mile commute the last 7 days ( usually 39 mpg ). Had to scrape ice off 3 times once with 2 inches of ice took 40 minutes of idling to get the car warm enough to start the melt the ice. Boy does that kill the mileage. We bought a HCHII today. 54mpg for the 85 mile drive home. For those that remember me from the god awful 06 EX I had, I expect some real good mpg when I'm behind the wheel. The wife should be able to get EPA or better out of it.
