People are dumb. They don't consider the factors that might contribute to killing mpg which is probably acceleration, hills, weather, tires, etc...

People just want a car that gets 40+ driving it like an a*shole. And the Prius can deliver that. The Civic/Insight can't.
to me a hybrid is best fit for traffic driving / real city driving. on the highway they are not all that impressive.

agreed, this is where hybrids really shine

winter or not i think you should be able to get better mpg than that...look at your driving style and ways to improve..

slower starts
slower cruising speeds
coast when possible
as easy on the throttle as possible

I have an 06 SI. Plenty of Mods, and I consistently avg 26-28 MPG with a combination of city and hwy which is within the 24/31 rating. These numbers for the Hybrids are way out of spec by a good 5-6 MPG. I would be pissed too, and it seems like your not alone judging by the lawsuit Honda is encountering over their Hybrid Civic.

if you look on the window sticker you'll see that the city and hwy rating are the average they found in their testing cycle
so
for the city it may say 40mpg...but really they hit 36mpg on the low side and 44mpg on the high side(just examples, not factual numbers)...i wouldn't get too upset unless you are always below the bottom number on the window sticker

REALLLYYYY take into consideration your driving style and WHERE you drive...these have the greatest impact on mpg

with my R18 Auto trans and the route i take i am have been able to average 43mpg this year over the course of 28k miles....but that is all in HOW i drive and the routes i choose to take

if you daily drive is 5 miles, lots of stop and go, and in the cold weather you will get the bottom of the EPA rated fuel economy UNLESS you are really milking the hybrid for all it's worth

It's because most people do not wait till their car is fully heated up before they start driving. It is the cold engine that kills your gas mileage.

so, driving while the engine is cold (also warms the engine up faster) and actually moving will get you worse mileage than if you sat in one place until the engine warms up?

I just got my 2008 Civic Hybrid after trading in an '02 Prius. I used to get about 44-45 MPG with my prius prior to moving residency. Since moving I now use a stretch of highway that is dominated by a**h*** drivers that force me to speed up because going 70 mph is still too slow to be safe. I then got only 40 mpg on my prius.

What you say is true, people want a car that gets 40+ mpg and still allows then to drive like they own the road. What alot of civic owners don't understand is that the lower your RPMs, the better your mileage.

My recommendation:

1. For those who are not used to driving a hybrid car, try using the cruise control at a reasonable speed (about 5-10+ speed limit, varies on your traffic) when going along level roads. The computer can properly estimate the amount of gas and electric power to keep a good MPG.

2. Try skating your gas pedal. Bring your car up to speed, then only apply enough gas to keep yourself at that speed. Skating refers to the way that a skater (ice or roller) moves his foot off the ground, then back to push himself forward. So in relation to your gas pedal, apply gas, then let off, apply, then let off. This is a very slight push on the pedal, if you are a skater you probably have a better touch for this than others. By barely even revving the engine, this can help your gas mileage immensely.

Using this method I have been able to drive from downtown San Diego to La Jolla (all uphill) at 80 and not lose a single 1/10th of an mph.

Ah I see.

So nearly 35 mpg over a highway trip that likely involved lots of steady driving. Apples to llamas....

I get tired of this referencing non hybrids by the mpg you got on one tank over some highway trip with good weather. Get 30 mpg once in your GTO and forever your GTO is now a 30 mpg car.

We just completed a round trip from Tulsa to PHX. Took the HCHII loaded heavy as hell. Car was boating bad. Hypermiled it out in a straight shot. Driving back we stayed a night on the road and no hypermiling. Used CC with it set at the current speed limit coming back. Went out I-40 came back the southern route. Tires were at 60 psi. with a simple WAI. The trip average was 56 mpg. Total of 4 tanks of fuel used. The HCHII will do things at hwy speeds the Prius can only dream about. One must really be driving there HCHII's really hard to get 30 mpg tanks out of them.

damn 60 psi? i don't remember exactly but i think the max psi on the tire say like 45 or 50 or something. sounds like premature tire wear

also i think the mpg displays are somewhat bogus......example: i fill up my tank, reset my trip meter, put 400 miles on it, gas light turns on, go fill up again. 10 gallons of gas. 400/10 = 40mpg. i look at my display and it tells me i averaged 36.something........

so for these people complaining about their mpg display, try what i did and see if it is that accurate. go fill up, reset one of your trip meters, drive it till your gas light comes, fill up again, divide the miles u put on it by how many gallons u filled up with the second time and see if it matches your display reading. u may be surprised.

Tires are wearing great! Max sidewall psi is 44. Normally run them between 44 and 50 psi. Went up to 60 psi because of the ubber heavy load the car was carring. I have been running max sidewall or better since steel belted radials have become the norm. many years not issue. I wish folks would get over this stupid high tire psi crap.......

I use the cars display, my SGII and do hand calc's. Our car reads low about 1.5 mpg from hand calc's.
