Hi all,
I've got an '06 Civic EX coupe, but was reading about "hypermiling" here and wondered what that was, exactly. A quick search on Google turned up the article below, which happens to be specific to the 2006+ Civic Hybrid. I've posted the link (below) for others (like me) who may wonder what hypermiling is. The author describes his experience with basic hypermiling techniques, and the article is divided into three parts "for better understanding and readability." Note: I do not endorse hypermiling--it's just a reading link. :-) Regards, Glenn in CT |

I hypermile during my work week. I enjoy getting up to 50 mpg in my EX at times and watching those poor sot's in there cars and trucks getting 10's and teens mpg and blaming the world for high gas prices. Sure I have fun with my EX. And my last few tanks have suffered because of A/C use. I have a 41.8 mpg life time ave. in my Civic. Soon as it cools down some I will be posting 50 mpg tanks untill winter sets in. I would have bought a hybrid Civic over my EX if it would have came with a 5MT option and rear disc brakes. I started out wanting a Si. But I will not pay MSRP or above for any car. And yes I would have hypermiled the Si for my daily comuting needs. http://www.cleanmpg.com/index.php?pa...wuser=psyshack |

My tips for starting to hypermile.
As a hypermiler myself ('04 HCH), I can give some tips that don't affect the driving style:
I suggest a survey of the car first:
If you feel comfortable, you can increase the air pressure in the tires. You don't need to jump them dramatically, just a few pounds. This can make a big difference. **NOTE** At no time should you inflate the car's tires above the tire manufacturer's sidewall max. This tip is a debatable and controversial action. Some like to run high, others swear against it. |

This might help explain the Prius that is constantly well below speed limit on the freeway from my house almost every morning. Nothing like having someone poke along at 45MPH in a 65 zone during the morning commute causing all the traffic to go around him. I see this guy almost every day, we must leave at the same time.

This is fine for anyone who wants to do this. I completely understand why also, but before I bought my Si, I made out a budget and I set aside way more than I would ever need for gas (I think I alloted $150/month for gas). I will never hit that number. If I were to hypermill, my Si would hate me, and I also did not buy it for fuel economy.

I didn't know what I was doing could be called "hypermilling". I shift at around 2500 when i go into 2nd, then into 3,4,5 at 2k. By around 30-35mph I'm in 5th.
I've been very pleased with my mpg so far; getting above what honda estimated. This of course is with still hitting v-tec every now and then, and blasting the a/c on hot days. I also like to drive around with my windows down on a nice day. Come fall I think my mpg will skyrocket since i won't need he a/c. |

Well EPS (electronic power steering) and Power Brakes work fine w/ the engine off ![]() I used to do this a couple of times a day in my yaris, it had EPS too. Could easily see 2-4 mpg gain in the yaris. I only do it in the Si when i can coast for like a mile down a long hill and i'm not in a rush mood. Your basically doing what hybrids do when coasting, reducing lost braking energy. A wierd thing too, i have a scangauge and it seems like the Si uses gas when off and coasting , 0.1 GPH off (gallon/hr) vs 0.2-0.3 idling |

i cant possibly understand this. any modern engine will not use gas to coast in gear. however, it will use a bunch of gas when it needs to start the engine.
i dont do any turining off the engine crap, but i am smart about how i approach traffic lights, drive in traffic and whatnot, and i make about 25-26MPG in the city with AC on fully cold in my Si while still including several stretches of VTECing acceleration per day. |
