rear coupe bumper underside panel?

this little black cover/ panel that goes under the car right near the rear bumper, seems like for highway air diffuser? is it really needed? i took it off to see what it looks like with out it, i like it without it bec you can see the springs, lcas and subframe. it just look cool.
