rear coupe bumper underside panel?

this little black cover/ panel that goes under the car right near the rear bumper, seems like for highway air diffuser? is it really needed? i took it off to see what it looks like with out it, i like it without it bec you can see the springs, lcas and subframe. it just look cool.

Yes, it's for airflow... to the OP, if your (slightly) reduced mileage is worth the looks, then go for it!
