well if 3500rpm's the vtec supposedley "disengages" then wtf is going on with the engine at 5500rpm's at full throttle? Sounds like a different animal to me.

lmao. this is all too funny.

i know what the OP is talking about, it almost feels like an auto tranny downshifting. it hesitates for a second or two.

to counter that slight hesitation, which feels like a lack of low end torque, i will downshift, or rev a bit higher while making that second to third shift.

Uhh that would be i-VTEC disengaged "performance" mode for R18A people.

Hence why you shoulda done your homework. If you want the "old" and "real" performance VTEC, you get the Si. If you want the "new" and "fuel economy" VTEC, you get a DX/LX/EX.

I have no sympathy for people who make a poor finacial/automobile purchases and not research before hand.

funny thing is, i talk about cars alot. And people ask me.... What kinda car you drive? And i tell them a Civic. They either look away, roll their eyes, or laugh like its a joke. Mind you, my 2 previous cars was a 98' C280 fully loaded, and a 89' Porshe 944S2. But they dont know that, so they look at me like im some kind of wanna be racer or something. When i got the loan for a car, i had $32k, to spend on a car, The dealer "that i brought my benz from, so i was trying to stick with them" didnt have a GTI, so i was lookin at the A-3 3.2 V-6, they didnt have that, so she asked me bout a saab 9-3 and i said **** no, so according to what type of vehicle style i was looking for, was down to 1 Si, 3 accords (2 4-doors, and 1 coupe), and 2 civics (lx,ex) So i just said ahh **** it lemme get the Silver EX 2-door. So BOOM here it is. This was 2 weeks before christmas in germany and i wanted a whip to get myself for christmas, so i just settled for the EX. So people say, you couldnt afford an Si, or you should of gotten this or that, sometimes its not that simple. I got the ex because it was almost the only vehicle they had that i would actually buy. That 1 Si by the way was reserved and had 2 days left and the last day that person that had it on reserve for, he found a bank that would give him a loan to get it. So i couldnt get an Si till february 07'. I wasnt tryin to wait so i just got the EX. So not everyone that dont have an Si couldnt afford one. Sometimes your choices are limited. But im happy i got this lil ex cause when me and my friend with the 06' Si go to the nurburgring, he always have to fill up before we get there and ends up arriving with 3/4 tank of gas and i get to the ring on the same tank with 1bar less than half. (this is going all balls the whole way)

After 5200 rpm, the different sound you hear is the dual-stage intake manifold switching from the long runners to the short runners. This how the R18's make low rpm torque and sohc vtec power in the high rpms.

ahh. well i always thought the v-tec in the R18 wasnt just economy vtec. I know there's a switch over at 5500rpm's, but i remember somewhere people was saying the r18 dont have v-tec, and im like well what the **** is 5500 rpm's because that shit sounds mean than a mug when you crack your stock box, or get a cold air intake.

Then i seen a video that shows it has the economy v-tec cam lobes and it has the performance cam lobes for when you go wide open. So im like it does have performance v-tec, just only with one cam. whilst the Si has the dual cams with high performance cams so when the engine makes the switch over, its runningon high cams. some very well engineered cars

f*ck yeah man. everything i wanted to say about all the "should have got an Si", and "couldnt afford an Si?"

sometimes i just dont want to wait two months to get my car. i want it when i go to buy it. otherwise, i buy something different, that is just as nice.

there ya go. i knew i wasnt the only one that wasnt limited to what i was able to buy. i was just being a loyal customer to the dealership, cause right down the street they had a 03' vette (sonic blueish color) going for $19g's, i could of easily cali walked my ass down there and got it, but nooooooo. Its all good, no complaints here, im happy where im at. imma give this ex to my shorty and then get my 350z (maybe 370z) and tune it for 550whp, and tune it for 200mph for my daily driver. Wish me luck. one more deployment and its all mines :)

cheers bro. i could say that all the dudes who are going crazy with their si's could have just coughed up a few extra g's, and grabbed an evo or an sti, and right away they got a faster oem car. but im not going after anyone just 'cuz they got a model that i didnt.

yup exactly. but those are great cars also, but too many people hype them up, I love to take underdog cars and mod them and beat "well respected cars" I was thinking about that with this EX, but i changed my mind since my girl loves it soo much, and she dont like the modding thing i'll just give it to her. Its much love for all car owners from me u know. I just hate when people judge who u are, or what kind of a driver you are based on what you drive. People bring their cars to me for me to test drive and tell them what i think about their car. I think thats pretty ****** cool that many many people let me drive their cars to see what their car can do, and if i think its fast, or brakes well and stuff like that. but i guess everyone cant know that u know. and they all know i drive a civic, but they know im a respectable enthuisast and driver, took some time to get my rep up like that, but its there

I too used to feel the lag when shifting, usually between second and third. Now that I try to drive solely in i-VTEC mode I never feel it, so it must be the ecu "hunting" for the mode you wish to drive in. I think while you are shifting (off throttle) it goes into i-VTEC mode and then when you let out the clutch and step on it, it goes back to normal mode, thus the lag.
