install aftermarket radio on DX sedan

My new Civic DX sedan has roughly a 4" x 7" rectangular space, covered by a piece of plastic, into which I want to install an aftermarket radio with cassette player. I've seen plastic install kits for 7th generation Civics that consist of a roughly 4" x 7" rectangular frame with a pocket in the lower half and a radio-sized cut-out in the upper half (http://www.installer-data.com/item/d...hp?it=99-7899), but all that I've found online so far for the 2006 Civic is a much bigger unit that includes cut-outs for a bunch of other controls like the heater (http://www.installer-data.com/item/d...hp?it=99-7871). The piece of plastic that covers that 4" x 7" space moves independently, and my dealer's service dept says they *think* I can just pry it out. I would love to be able to just pry it out and replace it with something that would hold the radio. The directions for one of the bigger units involve taking most of the dash apart, including pieces on both sides of the steering wheel.

Does anyone know for sure whether the covering plate can just be pried out?

Do the plastic install units that fit the 7th gen Civics fit the 2006?

If need be, could I just cut the proper sized rectangle out of the existing plastic cover plate to fit my radio?

not that hard. just follow the instruction above on how to take the dash out to put your head unit in. you don't need any dash kit.

just get the din pocket & radio antenna adapter from the dealer and you're set. Here's my DX

I appreciate the responses, and that's an incredible DIY tutorial, but the purpose of my questions was to avoid having to take that much of my new car apart. Is the simpler install I asked about possible?

Unfortunatly, you do have to take the dash apart to get the radio cage behind the dash piece. Can you post a pic of your dash the way it is now.

btw...welcome to 8thcivic

sounds like you're3 a noob, you're better off taking the car to someone do it for you before you destroy it.

Yes. Not wanting to damage the new car was the motivation behind my original post, which was seeking a simpler install. I installed an aftermarket radio in my previous car without difficulty, but it didn't require taking the whole dash apart. I'm still holding out some hope that an install into a DX can be simpler than the EX install that the tutorial you cited shows.

The new 2006 Civics require a lot of dash dissasembly but it is not extremely hard, just time consuming. Some of the clips are hard to unclip and remove some of the panels.
contact American International at aitech@aius.net they have 2 different kits for these vehicles.

I have the DX coupe and I just went and bought a dashkit for a 99 Mercury Cougar and it fits into my car perfect . I bought the wire for the connection from the car to the cd player and i bought the antenna wire also . Now I have an aftermarket cd player in my car all I need now is Air Conditioner .

How did you go about installing that Cougar dash kit, cepkda?

I'm thinking I can just drill two finger-sized holes in the plastic plate that covers where the radio goes, then pull it out and either mount the aftermarket radio to that plate or get a dask kit like the Cougar one. Does this sound feasible, or is there some other reason (other than getting the cover plate off) one has to take the whole dash apart?

to get the coverplate off if you have a DX all you have to do is pop it out . No removal of the dash is needed . Just the covering that is in the place of the none existing radio . Then if you buy a Cougar Dash kit from Circut City for $9.99 You place the cdplayer into the slot of your dash and then place the dash kit into the remaning gap . It is a full complete peace unlike the civic dash kits where you have to connect certin parts. Once you place this Cougar dashkit into the gap it fills in the surrounding area and is very stabel to hold the cd player you install . Easy as pie . Takes like 1 min to install .
