Strange 1st gear issue

I have a manual 07' EX sedan.

I come to a stop at a stop sign/light and while I'm putting it into 1st gear, I'll feel some resistance half way through. If I stop the shift lever when I feel the resistance, pull back, and try again, the resistance will be gone and I'll be able to put it into 1st with no problem. Anyone else experience the same thing? I don't have any problems with any other gears, just this 1st gear issue.

Sorry in advance if this sounds odd or if I'm not wording it right.

My first gear in my Si will not let me shift into first if I am going anywhere above 7 or so miles per hour.

its a forward motion lockout, all Honda transmissions have had something like this. My Accord had a similar problem, i got in the habit of putting it in second before going to first which for some reason makes it let go of the lockout when it sticks. That habit has carried over to the Civic and i haven't had any issues with the lockout sticking

Thanks for that tip. I'll try that out later today.

You know, I've read a lot with people with SI's changing their MTF over to Amsoil or GM synchromesh.

I have an EX and I haven't experienced any shifting problems especially with that 3rd gear issue I've read so much about. Have you changed out your MTF for Amsoil, GM, or Honda's own? I have about 4,500 miles on my car and I'm scheduled for an oil change in about 4 days. I'm debating whether or not I should also get my MTF changed.

You shouldn't have any problems shifting into first at a stop. Might wanna get that checked out.

Thanks, I was really starting to worry about this. I'm glad it's the norm. Also, thanks for the tip on 2nd before 1st. [FG2 owner]

I sometimes have the "problem" too. I don't think it's something wrong with the car. Just shift into 2nd and then into first, it should slide in easily

+1 to what ethlar had to say. I generally try to be in first gear 2-3 seconds before the light turns green. Sometimes it'll lock me out. If you're rolling, you have to rev match to get it back into first gear. Lots of resistance in first and reverse.

Yup, both my old '92 Accord EX and my new Civic have done the same thing, as far as I know and from what I've heard it's just a precautionary measure to ensure you don't shoot forward into someone or over-rev the engine. I usually put it in nuetral after it sticks, try it again, and it always lets me on the second time when deccelerating.

i have to say i don't have this problem.. i have an 06 MT civic coupe.. if i'm rolling to a stop sign sometimes and rolling through it i can put it into first at about 9 or 10mph no problem. there's slight resistance but nothing that can't be overcome.. maybe i'm thinking about the wrong thing?

I had the same issue in my 97 Accord, and now it does the same thing in the civic. I just pop her into second, and then down into first without an issue.

Honda techs told me a long long time ago that it was a Honda safety feature, and that it was nothing to worry about. My Accord did it, and it went 178,000 miles without ever needing the clutch replaced. So I wouldn't worry about it.
