Think I Can Tow a Car with my DX?

Just wondering if I was wanting to tow my other car like twice a year, think that'd really hurt my 5-speed manual DX? The other car weighs 3500+ lbs and the trailer would probably weigh about 500. Total weight of 4000 lbs. I mean, if I was planning on doing a lot of towing........then I'd trade this car in, but I don't want to get a car with poor fuel economy just so I can tow a car a couple times a year. My friend just got a Jeep Liberty to tow his car with (rated at 4000 lbs towing)........but I can only imagine the fuel consumption on something like that.

Seems a bit heavy to tow with your car. Not to mention, a tow hitch on a Civic just looks trashy.

2800 lbs towing 4000 pounds......I want to see you try to stop quickly, not to mention the the amount of weight lifting the front end up...maybe a wave runner or motorcycle

check your manual under towing, it has all of the specifications for tongue weight and axle weight for the car.

I would say no. If only 1 or 2 times a year, just get a tow truck if your not going too far. Better to spend a little $$$ there than put wear on the Civic.

My family has a 4000 lb boat that we tow with a chevy avalanche (V8 with 330 tq). Let me know if your successful so I can just do it with my civic and get better gas mileage.

It should be ok as long as its all down hill with a sand pit at the bottom to help you stop.

Obviously i was joking before, but seriously, that is a terrible idea. For one, there are many components in the transmission that may fail under that much addition load. Also, the suspension in the rear would be in danger of being ruined. I doubt a sufficiently strong hitch could be mounted on a civic, and any hitch would look like ass. In addition, a car with 128 ft lb of torque would have any incredibly hard time pulling 4000 lbs, even if you were lucky enough not to ruin your transmission/suspension components. My family towed a 4000 lb boat with a van that had 160 ft lb of torque and it could barely do it. Dont do something stupid like this to your civic.
Lastly, any towing with a civic is not recommended. Most cars are atleast rated to tow around a 1000, but the civic is not. That should tell you something...

For once or twice a year, this would be my choice.

Edit the class 1 hitch you can buy for the Civic is only good for 1000lbs to weight, see the thread webby linked for more info.
