SI muffler installed on EX coupe
Just finished replacing my oem muffler with the oem SI muffler. I had read many different ways to do make this work such as add washers, remove the springs and buy shorter bolts, and others. So while the right rear wheel was off, my mechanic buddy and I were also installing my new rotors and pads, she (yes, I said she) said there must be a better way to do this. So we started by looking at the SI gasket and I told her about how the bolts don't exactly line up with SI muffler flange and the EX mid-pipe flange. Guess what guys, it took her less than a couple of of seconds to solve the problem and create a perfect fit. Being a pack rat like most women, She dug around in her garage and handed me piece of aluminum pipe that was almost a perfect to make a spacer to go over the mid-pipe and fit snuggly inside the SI gasket. So we modified the piece of pipe into a spacer sleeve, slide it over the mid-pipe, placed the SI gasket over the sleeve, installed the SI muffler, aligned the bolts with the springs and tightened them alternating them to a snug fit. She said, by the way we all call her "Maguyfer" because she can fix anything,if anyone would like a spacer she would make them for $10 as long as she can find the right pipe to make them from. Sorry, I don't have a camera, so no pictures.

![]() As you can see by the drawing, the sleeve or spacer (labeled as new part) slips over the existing EX mid-pipe in front of the flange. The new sleeve fits over that piece of pipe. After the sleeve is in place, slide the SI gasket over the spacer. Once this is done, the SI axleback muffler will center on the EX mid-pipe. As you can see in the drawing, the 2 flanges do not line up exactly. So install both the springs and slowly tighten each spring alternating every few turns until the muffler is secure to the mid-pipe. By doing this, it will center everything and center your exhaust tips in the opening of the bumper. Sorry I could not provide pictures hopefully this will show everyone what I have done. If you have any questions, please ask. |

If I could take a picture off the completed installation, all you would see is that it looks OEM and that is the point. This way you have not altered the factory design. If you just bolt it directly without the springs it makes the connection rigid and may cause unwanted wear to the exhaust mounts. If you use the OEM bolt with the spring with or without extra washers with just the OEM SI gasket the connection will slide around and may cause an exhaust leak. The drawing I provided shows a very simply way to fix a know problem IMO.
