2007 Civic Performance Monitor. Help?

Has anyone ever tinkered with a performance monitor before? I just purchased a Dashhawk (Generation 2) by MSD Ignition but it is not working and i called them to describe how the Dashhawk reads "CAN failure" when i plug it into the OBDII connector under the dashboard. I spoke when two tech supports at MSD and they both sayd that it could either be becuase my car does not support CAN (Controller Area Network) or it could be because I have a CAN fuse that was blown out. Strangely, my car model is listed on their website as one of the cars that have been tested to be compatable with the Dashhawk. I check the manual and craw underneath the dash and I didnt see a fuse for a CAN circuit so i called the Honda Service department and asked them about anything they knew about a CAN fuse. The Service department didnt know anything about it so they called a local dealer to ask one of their engineers there and yet still no luck.

What should I do? Suggestions? Comments anyone?

Welcome to 8th.
All 2006-2007 Civics are ISO 15765 (CAN) compliant. By 2008, all cars sold in the U.S. will have to be CAN compliant as well.

I have a ScanGauge 2, as do several other folks on 8th and we haven't had any issues with our units.

If available, I would try the DH on a different Civic just to make sure your OBD is working correctly.

Please Elaborate on The ScanGuage

Well i have decided to return this thing since no one could help me get it to work. Its probably defective anyway because i have tired the DashHawk on 3 different cars that claimed to be supported by. I am just looking for a simple OBD reader that can tell me my realtime MPG, RPM, and engine load. -Mainly interested in the realtime MPG tho. Can someone tell me more about this ScanGuage and any other OBD readers perhaps that would satisfy my needs? Where did you guys put the ScanGuage on your cars anyway?

The ScanGauge2 seems to work flawlessly with my 07. I dropped it in the tray to the right of the Aux Input jack. It is out of the way and I didn't have to use any sticky substances or punch any holes.

In the picture it is set in an old GPS mount, but since then I took that out and used the velcro provided with the ScanGauge. It has not moved in several hundred miles, and it is still very portable.

I have a Civic Ex with Navigation. will it be compatable? how closely can the scangauge2 mimic the interrior dashboard blue? is there bac on the SG so you can see it in the dark? How much information can be displayed at once on the SG? Can i have it show Average MPG and Current MPG at the same time?

Compatible? Yes
Mimic the Civic's blue LED color? Yes
Bac? Yes
Info displayed? Up to 4 different parameters
Avg fuel? Yes(per trip and tank)
Current fuel? Yes

My SG2 is set up to display: Current fuel, RPM, Engine load, Throttle position.

It can also report and clear CEL codes.

Oh and it can do mpg for tank, today, yesterday, and current trip (resets if the engine is off for like 3 mins)

Hey can the dashhawk does mpg? I'm totally buyin one if it does

Hope these help:
(camera phone + 5gbs of webhosting = lots of pics )

Thats air intake temp, water temp, mpg and gallons per hour :)

Tank mpg (alot of city driving)

Oh and here, be lucky i was bored

yeah the Dashhawk does MPG and a bunch of stuff like 0-60 and quarter mile times. the whole reason i was looking for a performance monitor was so i can monitor my cars fuel consumption. I have an EX and i am averaging like 20 mpg in the city and 30 on the freeway. i think thats pretty bad since sticker says 30/40 mpg. I am worried that i could have damaged some pistons/cylinders by chipping them when i first got the car and i redlined it all of the time. right now i want to get another OBD reader (my dashhawk is being returned since it didnt work) so i can see if my bad MPG is due to my bad drivign habits or if the engine pistons are chipped during the "break=in" period and not causing a tight seal. im worried because im averaging less than some SI owners on their 2007 models.

how current is the MPG reading on the Scan Gauge? does it update every 5 seconds or is it really REAL-TIME readings?

You can adjust the rate, its about maybe a little faster than 1 update per second at its fastest.

You have a stick or auto?

Do a quick search and you'll find that the fuel consumption rating varies GREATLY with driving style and conditions.

The city average has been re-adjusted to 25 MPG and 36 for highway.

My SG2 updates every second or so.

readjusted? like as in thoes numbers are on the stickers now? or is that like actual consumer average?

I have an auto =p and its interesting i get like 20 in the city and 30 on the freeway. i have read on this site that some people get like that same MPG with an SI. People with EX's claim that they can get up 350-400 miles per tank and even one case up to 450 MPG. its just so much off from the sticker ratings on these cars. even with the new rating i am still under thoes number by 20%

Does anyone think that it could be because i used to redline the engline all the time when it was new and not "broken- in" yet and now there are chips and cracks around the piston and the cylinder thus not causing a tight seal - wasting gas?

-thanks for the 1 sec refreash rate yall

I used a leftover GPS mount initially, but now it's sitting on some Velcro w/ double-sided tape. It has stayed put since the day I mounted it, but I can move it with just a pull. As long as you're under 6' tall and your seat is at least half way back, you should have no problem seeing it.

I remember when i first got this car that it would rev like crazy when i barely tap the gas pedal. Now, i stomp on it and it would barely move. Does anyone know how to reset the car's "computer chip" so that i can lightly touch the pedal and it would go vroom vroom vroom?

This looks like an interesting gadget. How much do they sell for? I have never heard of this or seen one in a vehicle before.

I think it is pointless data. I would rather spend my money on a datalogger and monitor thing such as: Volumetric flow, Coolant temp, timing, fuel trim, narrow ban air/fuel, TPS...etc. Did I mention it is able to erase CEL as well...

I can calculate fuel consumption based on amount used, and amount to fill up over a few cycles.

Yeah. Basically the test that made the Civic's(and others) mileage so impressive was very old. The new test takes in to account the higher speed limits, shorter city trips, and more aggressive acceleration that today's drivers encounter.
Same car but different numbers.

Your mileage in a Civic will definitely vary. This models mileage is extremely sensitive to cold weather, stop-n-go traffic and quick acceleration.

No. Honda engines are renowned for their durability, so redlining wouldn't hurt it.

I got it for $150. shipped. I find it very useful for day-to-day mpg checks, distance to empty, and it will also display and clear CELs. It has some other features that I have not yet looked at, but for me it was the intake air temp, coolant temp, and mpg that I needed to optimize efficiency. I have yet to get less than 33mpg out of a whole tank, and have flirted with 40 several times, but I do drive conservatively, with one eye on this gauge.
