Question Spare tire swap?

Hi all,

I don't think anyone's posted about this, but apologies if it has.

Anyway, I will be getting a new set of rims soon (17" EP3), and will be getting rid of my stock EX coupe alloys (16"). My girl has an LX sedan with the steelies (not sure of the size, but I think they're 16"), so I was thinking that I'd just give my stock alloys to her. Now I was wondering if I would be able to use one of her old steelies as my new spare tire. I imagine now that going to 17s that my old spare MAY be a little small. Would it be a good idea to use her old wheel as my spare? Moreover, would it fit in the spare tire compartment in the trunk? Something tells me no, but I was curious to see if anyone else has done this before. Would weight be an issue? Thanks a lot for your responses guys (and girls :gaygiggle).

Not worth it. It'll be so inconvienent if you were to run into a problem. Besides, do you think you'd notice a difference? I bet if someone removed your spare before you got into your car and drove, you wouldn't notice it at all.

As for the opt, if I recall correctly, the spare tire space is very specific for the dimensions of an actual donut..

Thanks for all the replies! Took me a while to get back to this thread, because it didn't show up under my subscribed list that it has been updated...

Anyhow, I'll probably try the fit just to see if it does and report back when I can. If it doesn't fit, then I might consider saving up for that extra EP3... =P

Thanks again for the replies!

My 15" DX steelies did not fit in the spare tire compartment upon getting new rims. Well they fit in there, however you can't close the cover because the wheels are too tall (wide). I can never remember but the DX stock wheels are 185 or 195, LX and up are at 205 I think, so you won't be able to close the cover with the LX steelies either.

poizun,
I think a full size tire would fit just fine but you may not be able to put back the styrofoam insert. Also, if upgraded your tires to 17", you should not use a spare 16" tire. It's a matter of physics--unless you want your car to be lopsided? It could be dangerous to drive...

The non-donut tires do not fit in the spare tire well without leaving the floor cover open. Also, the oem donut is a smaller overall diameter than the other wheels anyways.

Yea, I thought that donuts were always smaller than the normal wheels ya put on there...

Anyway, I JUST got the new rims put on! So excited. A little more road noise (I've never upgraded to bigger rims/higher performance tires before), but lovin it nonetheless. Three compliments so far in 20 minutes hahaha
