modding the r18

how well these engines respond to mods? are they good like the k20 or crappy like the d17 or in the middle?

R18's are pretty damn good lil engines if you do em right...

First off, AT aint the way to go but still can be better when
things are installed anyhow....

- CAI / I suggest this mod using an InJen or Fujita
This will allow for better airflow to the engine also allowing
for denser air - 8HP gain to the crank i believe?

- Exhaust system upgrade
Better sounding and small HP gain on the Cat-back i believe

- Race header would be sweet if they made one for the R18
because the 2-bed cat inside the header robs you of HP,
i think around 10-15HP approx.

- You could install the AJP turbo but i myself wouldnt do this
unless upgrading to forged pistons, etc...

Its all on what you want in your ride, Mid-range, Torque??
Ex: Im not sure if an aftermarket intake manifold has been made
but i believe this ups your midrange HP generally....

browse the forums and youll see all kinds of ill-faded shit
done to these R18's

I have an LX coupe and just put the Injen CAI on over the weekend, great bang for the buck upgrade! adds a little power but most of all it makes it sound much better, seemed to smooth out the shifting as well (I have an A/T). Other than this I have not really looked into much else, but they seem like good motors and there is plenty of info here if you search around.

it has an i-vtec (intelligent)...just punch the gas and you'll notice the jekyll and hyde nature of the motor

well, the i-vtec is engaged all the time since it has two settings: fuel economy and performance. The fuel economy mode switches to performance mode around 3000-3500 rpm's.

If you get an aftermarket intake, you'll be able to HEAR when performance vtec is engaging (the intake pipe resonates loudly, especially with the CAI's)

Vtec CAN be engaged between 1500 and 3500 rpmīs depending the way you drive. If youīre in "load", pressing the gas and requesting power, it disengage if itīs inside that rpm range, or itīs not engaged at all. If youīre in "cruise" mode, and inside that rpm range, i-Vtec is engaged for fuel economy.

Itīs not a performance VTEC. When itīs on, economy is the goal, and thatīs it.

with my R18 i get pretty damn good performance as long as im out of the
economy RPM range, i can also smoke the tires for ever on 18" rims/40 series tires with no problems. Ive smoked a Mazda3 (only one car ive tried on highway).

This is only with the CAI & axleback exhaust!
once somebody makes parts for these lil 1.8's i know theyll rip fo sho'

2006 Mazda3 Engines:

150-hp 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve inline-4; 160-hp 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve inline-4

From a 2.0/2.3L DOHC engine producing a lanky ass 150-160HP? LMFAO!!!

what a joke!
the Si has a 2.0 DOHC and gives out 197HP and its a CIVIC not a MahahaZDA

is the r18 vtec exactly like the one found in the rsx-s, type-r ?

why woul vtec be at 3k when its normally from 5k-6k on othe rmodels?

It's different; the R18A1 is a new engine for the 8th generation Civic DX/LX/EX. The RSX-S has a K20. The R18A1 is pretty much an economy engine and hits redline a lot lower than the K20 motors (~6800 vs ~8k or 9k [Si owners, help me out...hehe]) and is in "economy mode" up to 3k. This is a chart from WorldCarFans showing the iVTec engagement on the R18 (it's also sticked on this subforum):

I have an AT EX Coupe and have an AEM CAI and Magnaflow Catback exhaust, which is pretty much the only thing you can really do the car without having to boost it. Here's a few vids of my intake before I put on the exhaust.

Part 1:

Part 2: (I'm not racing or manual shifting it, just to be clear):

Hope this helps.

*edit: new to Honda and new to Honda engines, so I may be a bit inaccurate on my tech knowledge. Feel free to correct me

The R18 engine uses VTEC technology for better fuel economy.

The Si K20 engine uses VTEC technology for more power.

the k20 si used the k20a3 and it did not have the vtec found in k20a2(rsx-s)
so r18 dont have the "real" vtec
