I also use the cruise control religiously, cruising right at the speed limits which were 70 mph most of the time. After a few hours, I often find myself as low as 45 or as high as 90 mph so I think I'll just stick with the ol speed control for now. You're obviously better at maintaining a steady throttle position over the long run than I am. Drive Safe, Steve R. |

Took a drive from Crooklyn' to the Catskills last week. I averaged 37.8 MPG going and 40.7 MPG coming back.
The ~300 mile round trip consisted of 99% highway driving with a combined cruise control and numb foot driving. Once we got back to the city, the MPG dropped to about 20. BTW, these results are from my ScanGauge II, which has been jaw dropping accurate. |

First "real" tankful on our brand new LX Sedan 5-speed - using the same pump and the same station each fill-up - yielded 37.5 mpg. This was 95% highway, but there were 6 fully-cold starts in near-freezing weather, so that alone could have taken as much as 2 mpg in warm-up penalties.
I'm a high-mpg driver who gets better than EPA ratings in every vehicle I've owned. I definitely expect to top 40 regularly when the weather warms up. I've also noticed that the gas gauge between 1 "tick" below full and roughly 1/4 is 22 miles per "tick". (Gee... can anybody tell I'm an engineer? Naaaawwww...) |

Heres a pic of my scangauge last fill up. Hand calc's came in a 44.29 mpg. Full tank fill up to the lip of the neck. http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/showp...o/2741/cat/535
Ended up with a 43 mpg ave for todays drive ,,, ie the daily 84 mile grind round trip. Had a 15 mph head wind this am with 39f temp. This evening a cross wind. And bad day at work and some ugly beep and creep netted 42 mpg for the trip home. This wasn't easy mpg... I had to hypermile my as off. Meaning 55 to 60 mph speeds on the hwy,,, shifts at 3k rpm or under. Coasting with the engine on and off and basic load driving. Last edited by psyshack; 03-03-2007 at 01:40 AM. |

Yeah I gotta say that I am NOT impressed with my mpg. I'm getting under 25 in the city and am constantly shaking my head. I must admit that my style is "spirited" and I like going fast, but I've also got an eight year old V6 Passat that gets about the same. Is there a reason for this? Is something wrong? Anybody else think this same way?

As for your V6 Passat, it's been by general experience that, in spite of what most folks will tell you, a larger engine driven to a certain performance level will return about the same mileage as a smaller one pushed that much harder to keep up. I'm guessing that you're used to feeling a certain amount of pressure on your back while accelerating? The Passat will give you that more easily than the Civic because it's got a bigger engine but it's not working as hard to do it. All other variables being roughly the same and voila, you wind up with similar gas mileage numbers. It doesn't surprise me a bit. Bottom line is, if you want to see those 30+ mpg numbers out of your Civic, you're going to have to take your foot out of the radiator, metaphorically speaking! ![]() Drive Safe, Steve R. |

I have an 07 SI sedan with not even 500 miles on it. I filled up yesterday and rode around town, just a little traffic, driving easy, going the speed limit (45-55mph) most of the time and I got 33.15 mph. The day before I did the same thing, but I raced a z28 once and I ran it up to 80 twice full throttle and the rest of the time and It got 26mpg. This thing sucks some fuel when you get on it. If you baby it, it will get good mpg.

nop.. in canada ..
actually.. i drive like normal ppl .. not too slow like granny. nad not too fast like a racer ... however, i do drive conservatively, like if there's a red light next block , i don't accelerate at all.. unlike many ppl i know .. that's just a waste of gas imo.. when i get bored.. i even floor it sometimes |

However, I have to wonder how you guestimate your percentages. I don't mean that as a flame, just wondering! I'm getting a pretty consistant 33 mpg too but I'd have to say that I probably average around 40% highway each tank. That's just an estimate on my part. I'm sure that it's more than that sometimes and less in others but I'm nowhere near 100% city driving on average. Although, I do take in an occasional run-in with stop & go traffic in Houston and I only live a couple of miles from work but I don't think that's hurting me too much because of the way I drive the rest of the time.
