R18 Gas Mileage Question
Okay, let me check with you guys. Our Civics hold 10 gallons per tank? I also counted 20 bars on the gas meter right after filling up (full tank). So, that's 2 bars per gallon?
I'm asking this because I left Anaheim, CA (work) to commute back to my home in L.A. I had filled up a full tank and remembered to reset my trip mileage guage to 0. I got caught in MAJOR bumper to bumper traffic and it took me 2 1/2 hours to travel only a distance of 32 miles. When I got home, I only went down 1 bar (half a gallon?) If this is correct, that's just crazy gas mileage. |

The tank is 12 gallons. Like all fuel gauges, it's not entirely accurate at the extremes (near full & near empty). If you tend to top up the tank, you'll get a lot of mileage from the first bar. And even when there are no bars left, there's still about 1/2 - 1 gallon left in the tank.

13 gallons in a civic tank
i drove from Long Island to Philly and back last week in my EX, and had some gas to spare. Hauling ass thru NYC/NJ (LOTS of VTEC time) and crusing over 70 most of the ride i got 380miles on 12.3 gallons (31 MPG) and i beat the balls off it around them bad Jersey drivers lol ( i thought my car was gonna die but i was like Kramer in the Seinfeld episode watching the Fuel Gauge go well below "E" LOL) you definately have plenty of road ahead of you when that low fuel light comes on... |

I don't top off but the 12 (or 13) gallons to the tank explains the numbers. Still, I'm pretty impressed that I got that far in so much damn traffic and only burned so little gas (compared to my old ride). Oh, and I was literally averaging about 15 mph through the whole trip. Uhhh.. what an ordeal.

Just drove from Boston to Delaware and back in my 06 EX Coupe. Almost exactly 400 miles one way - about a 7 hour drive counting bathroom/coffee stops. Got 39.87mph going 70mph most of the time. TIP: "over" inflate the tires a bit for better mpg. The door sticker says inflate to 32psi and the sidewall max is 44psi on the stock Bridgestones- I inflate to about 40psi. The ride is a bit firmer, but I don't mind that at all.
BTW, weekday commuting in mostly crawl hour traffic still yields about 32 mpg every week. The tank is 13.2 gal per the manual. It still has about 2-3 gal left when the low fuel light comes on. |

I'm fortunate enough to have a 10 mile, all highway commute with no traffic... I'm averaging 36-37 MPG on every tank... I've noticed that even when the last bar is remaining (and the light has been on for 20-30 miles), I still have about 1.7-2 gallons left in the tank.

I've found that it takes quite a miles before the first part on a complete fill-up disappears, and after the first four or so, then it starts to crawl a bit faster disappearing.
I'm not sure why that is, but I don't top it off, I just wait for the gas pump to "stop" and then I'm done.

math
fill up the car and reset your trip or write down what the milege is (say you have 2500 miles on ur car) drive until u need gas and fill it up again and get the number of miles you have driven on that tank (say its now at 2830) now subtract the 2500 from the 2830 total and u have driven 330 miles on the tank now u need how many gallons it took to fill it up (say it took 12 gallons) divide the gallons by the number of miles 330/12 = 27.5mpg hope it made sense tried to make it as easy as possible

When you fill up for gas (100% fill-up), reset one of your trip meters back to zero. Drive as you normally would, until you need to get gas again (I usually get gas ASAP after the orange fuel low light chimes on). Then, when you get to the gas station, write down the number of miles you went on that trip meter you reset the last time you filled up. Then, after you fill up your car (to the brim again), take the number of gallons that it took to fill up your car to the top. Take the number of miles you wrote down before from your trip meter, and divide that by the number of gallons you put in the car, and that should give you your gas mileage. Soo...in summary: 1.) Next time you fill up your tank 100%, reset one of your trip meters back to 0 miles. 2.) Drive your car until the orange fuel light comes on (usually two bars left on gas meter). 3.) Fill up your car 100% again. Before this, look at how many miles you travelled on your trip meter that you reset last time you filled up, and save that number. 4.) After you fill back up 100%, take the total numbers travelled on that tank, and divide it by how many gallons you just put in your car. = MPG.

If you want to know your real mpg you have to use the formula above or buy a Scangauge II. |
