Exclamation Just a stupid question......

What is D3,D2, D1.................My guess is that these gears lock the engine to run on 3 or 2 or 1 cylinder, but i'm not sure. When I leave my AT Civic in D3 and accelerate it seems much faster than when I accelerate in Drive. I have always been curious as to why Automatics have these choces if it is "not recommended" you drive the car like a manual. (Someone on this board said they drove their AT Civic like a manual and people said it might cause premature wear on transmission.

***I never use these gears, all I do is use D-rive...............I use to drive a manual all the time.......**

How about giving him an answer, instead of a derogatory comment? Members shouldn't have to put up with these types of comments. He was obviously serious or he wouldn't have posted the question.

Pazbien, It's like Victor said, it's automatic upshifting, kinda like have a manual transmission in your car. :)

Well said. Can't really blame him if no one is willing to give him some insight.

D1, D2 and D3 refers to what gear you're in. D1 will restrict itself to first gear, D2 to second and so on.

The reason why it may seem to accelerate faster is because there's less gears to go through and it'll hit higher revs in each gear than it would in just "D." If you stick it in D2 and mash the gas, you'll notice how responsive the gas is. If it's in D and you do the same (mash the gas), the software has to think about what gear it should slip into, then provide the response.

By the way, I don't think these choices were included with the car as a replacement "sport shift." It can be used for towing something or getting up a hill without the automatic transmission struggling to find a gear.

Reason I asked was because I have driven manual cars for 12 years. An I always have wondered about this but never found out. Anyway thanks to the people that gave me an answer....
