I personally don't think thats rice... even if it is an automatic. the only downside to it would that you probably wouldn't be able to enjoy the 6000+ RPM's when you please.
if i had an automatic i'd probably do it too bottom line... who cares what people say. |

It depends on what your definition of rice is. My definition of rice are cosmetic upgrades that don't have any affect on performance. So yes, a lot falls under that category, but the worst ones being underglow, a park bench spoiler, LED wipers, etc. I mean, you can easily consider a plug and play HID kit or replacement of a USDM to JDM emblem rice, but I think they aren't really comparable to the initial ones I mentioned.
So anyways, I don't think having an intake is very ricey. It has its gains and it's under the hood, so no one really sees it. That is unless you so happen to stick a big Injen sticker or AEM banner on your car and use their plate covers, drive with your hood off so people can see your beautiful intake, etc. Then I think that's a little overboard. I would say go for it man. The gains of a CAI are awesome - sound, better mpg, better midrange to highend power, etc. The fact that you have an automatic doesn't create a different purpose for the CAI. There are plenty of users who have it on an automatic transmission and are really satisfied with it, just take in the "Getting Started" forum. My only suggestion would be to invest in an Injen CAI, rather than an AEM. They are the same price ($265.00 and free shipping to the U.S.) on our sponsor's site, http://www.corsportusa.com If you search the boards, you will see that the people who get CEL from intakes have been AEM users. And the people who switch from AEM to Injen are really happy with Injen's quality on the intakes made for the FG/FG2. Of course, there are also plenty of happy AEM users, but when things go bad with intakes, then I've only heard it from AEM users.

I say you get a K&N filter and call it a day. I have one in my Auto Lx and it made a difference in acceleration(smoothed it out) and gave the engine some grunt (noise wise). If comptech ever comes out with their Box for the R18 I will be getting that, if not, then Injen is the only way to go.

I have an AEM CAI in my A/T coupe. I'm one of the lucky ones that didn't get a CEL (well, I did...but because of a loose connection). Worth it to me, but if you're a little worried, get an Injen. Still, Kurt's price for 170 shipped isn't bad.

Actually AEM just came out with an SRI for the R18, but I still don't trust AEM with all the CEL's and such. |
