Legality of Carbon Fiber Hoods

I was thinking down the road to get a CF Hood and trunk for my FG2 but one of my buddies was saying that CF hoods are actually illegal to have hence why some people paint them to avoid the buzz from 5-0.

He brought up a good point that in an accident they really hinder any possible crumple zone benefit on the hood and infact almost explode and spread the CF everywhere potentially causing an even worse situation.

Has anyone else heard about this? BC primarily is my region of interest but even you AB guys if you have input lemme know. I just dunno if my buddy is blowin smoke or what.

what if you had no hood. is that illegal? for example.

you have sport bikes with plastics on (fairings)

if i would to take all my fairings (plastics) off and ride around on a naked bike its no problem at all. with if i took the plastic / metal/ carbon fiber hood of my car. is that illegal?

Kool.. Thats what I kind of figured. You just never know with our lovely ICBC what is legit and what isn't.

I just realized that everyone that responded is from the states. We have different laws up here and some of them are pretty damn fickle (ie. why the Mitsubishi evo X took so long to get here)

Does anybody from 'green'land know?

Hey Tino

the best thing to do is call ICBC and ask them, I did that before I ordered the tints for my head lights and tail lights. They just asked me why I would want to do that and that there was nothing in the books preventing me from doing it.

i have seibon cf mg style hood and never once have 5-0 harassed me about having any cf on my car[hood, lip, spoiler]....its not illegal...its just a safety issue, you gotta look into which hoods require hoodpins and which don't..in my case i asked and they said mine was fine without hoodpins...i hope that helped a little

your friend is correct. partially. CF components may be legal or illegal depending on the state. If anything, they are a safety hazard. FOr instance if u get into an accident, head on, and the car is designed a specific way for the crumple zones, and hood to crumple in...by replacing with CF...you are causing a [possible] safety hazard to you or a passenger. Insurance companies then have the option of not covering you. I have seen this on two occasions with friends.

the thing im wondering is, if you get into any type of serious head-on accident, how much of that force do you think the stock hood is going to take over a CF one? Im no scientist or expert, but i would think the frame and engine compartment make up more of the "crumple zone" than your hood would. (again, dont' quote me on this one)

Many people I know who have CF hoods have been pulled over and ticketed for various offenses and none have been hassled about a CF hood. Another person I know got into an accident with his car and it was a write off and ICBC paid out for the CF hood that was destroyed in the accident.

Okay thats the kinda experience (however unfortuneate) that I needed to see... so there weren't problems inthe past. Thanks Smatts!

If anyone runs into problems with parts and the 5-0 or whoever is saying they're illegal we should make an effort to post it so we all know about before gettin tagged.

i got pulled over yesterday for a speeding violation with my CF hood on, magnaflow exhuast, datum 1 tow-hook sticking out, and they didn't have anything to say about anything else except my speeding (which is bogus, but thats another story).

I emailed SEIBON, a huge carbon fiber hood seller and they told me carbon fiber hoods are illegal for city road use. But I have seen many people with cf hoods in my city in Saskatchewan and they don't have any cops bugging them. Hell, there are two people on my street with cf hoods and they have had them for a long time. I think they may technically be illegal, but the cops just dont give a crap.
