3rd gear grind (2nd and 3rd gear set replacement)

So I went to the dealership (Westwood Honda) where I bought my 07 Si and I told them about the 3rd grind/notch/pop-out issue showed them the TSB for the problem and asked if they could fix it.

They booked me an appointment and I had a mechanic (Stu) diagnose my car. Him and I went for a quick test and he said that he noticed the notchiness issue (really obvious on my car). The gear didn't grind during the short trip but he agreed that there was definitely a problem.

Stu was a really nice guy. He told the service rep to book me in for a 2nd and 3rd gear replacement (covered under warranty). The sales guy was trying to hint/tell him to say that there wasn't really an issue on my car since the job will take about 8-9 hrs of labor plus parts. Also, the TSB is for the U.S. and there hasn't been one released for Canada yet, so I'm not sure if the dealership's costs will be covered by Honda Canada.

Anyway, just wanted to let my fellow 8thgen members know that there ARE some good and honest mechanics/technicians out there! And I'm really happy to have them look and hopefully repair this annoying problem once and for all.

I wasn't expecting them to replace my 2nd gear (since it isn't part of the TSB)... oh well, I guess as long as they don't screw up my car during the repair then all is good!

Good job Travis! Hope all goes well with the repair (and that they are actually using the new parts)

All that powershifting and clutchless shifting, man! Just kidding. But anyways yeah good luck with the repairs. I'm holding off for a while; I don't want my car to be away for repairs, and I don'[t suffer from the problem nearly enough for me to want someone to rip apart my tranny. Hehe.

i was actually thinking that if they were not able to get rid of my 3rd gear problem, i'd grind the fck out of it so they'll actually replace it...hehe. but, they fixed it, for now...

Haha, pukuyo, well hopefully they also fix my issue. I bet when they dump the transmission fluid there will be bits of metal from the grinding, lolz... This is what we get when we buy a Honda that's made in Canada, and not in Japan... 2 words: Quality Control

The TSB said 2007 Civic Si - All. So I should be technically covered... but again, this is for the States, so I'm not quite sure if you will be as successful in Canada. I was lucky enough to meet a nice/honest mechanic.

It is really a tedious job becuz they have to disassemble the transmission to the main shaft... and then replace the gears. Well, I hope they ordered the new parts, but I don't see any reason why they would replace my old gears with potentially problematic ones again...

Had my car repaired under the 3rd gear TSB. Popped out less than a mile away from the dealership after I got it back and it's still notchy as all hell.

The car is being listed on Auto Trader this coming week.

Ouch, that's bad, feel bad for you dude. Well, if it doesn't work out then I'll go the Amsoil route and hopefully that will help the situation. Ugh, i can't believe that the manufacture didn't spot this problem when building the car.... =(

But the thing is I can't believe that they actually agreed to replace these parts... even if it doesn't fix the issue, I'm getting new parts which can't be bad... Plus, this job will cost AT LEAST $1000+ (labour 8hrs x $80-100/hr = 640-800ish! + parts) Yikes eh? Imagine shelling out that much money yourself, that would royally suck.

According to a few people I talked to - Amsoil MTF and an aftermarket Short-Shift kit fixes the problem.

I am going the same route. Had third hear replaced...still feels the same as it did before. My question is, have any of you actually watched the third gear being replaced? I am beginning to really wonder what was actually "replaced".

Was yours before or after the TSB? I'm about 99% sure they replaced mine. It was the first one they ever did at the dealership (called in a specialist who had done it before on the cars), and they were going to show me the old ones at my request, but it was all boxed up, and I said "don't worry about it."
