^ the GPS receivers only receive the satellite signals and won't transmit anything to the satellites. Unless you have a separate machine (like a PDA or cell phone) then the console usually is the receiver as well.
As far as I know, I don't think you can create/update your own maps. It'd save me a lot of money if you can! If anyone knows how, let me know!!! To the OP: Check this out http://www.durhamgps.com/index.php I don't know how shady this place is, but it's apparently registered with the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade. I suppose you could email them and ask about the Durham GPS business. Region of Durham shouldn't be too far from you...:) |

If you're paying on a cell phone its because the cell doesn't have GPS capability. You're paying to have your carrier or someone else trace you and relay that.
GPS is a free good. You are just tracking yourself in relation to stationary satellites around the world. Here in NA we use the US built system. Euro is building their own version, which one day, if you have a receiver that can read that signal, you can use it too. The one time fee is what you pay to obtain the unit. Just think of it as a real radio - not some garbage satellite radio (garbage how they can actually charge you a system fee), or a TV. You buy a unit that can receive a signal and then you can use it anywhere as long as the signal can be found. Its the same with all of these types of devices. Then in the more modern times (late 90s, now) we have GPS units with maps. That is useful, because unless you can Geo-code (use the coordinates) than a GPS is practically useless. You can just track how far you move, speed, etc. With a built-in map, the GPS receiver relays that into more user-friendly data...."you are on 1st street heading south". This is also why you often see better quality GPS systems in two parts - a receiver and a map screen, like the Tomtom 5. The garrmin ones usually have the receiver connected to the same motherboard to give you convenience of mobility. Tomtom's connects via bluetooth I think. |

If you have a laptop you can buy something like this http://radioworld.ca/product_info.ph...roducts_id=201 Pretty slick system. We used it here at work for a bit because one of the Superintendants bought it.
Another option for you! |
