Front Liscense Plate

In California, is it legal to not have a Front Liscense Plate?

Here's what a Google search pulled up:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d05/vc11713_17.htm

Quote:
Front License Plate Bracket
11713.17. (a) Following the retail sale or lease of a motor vehicle for which the department issues two license plates, a dealer may not deliver the motor vehicle unless either of the following occurs:

(1) The motor vehicle is equipped with a bracket or other means of securing a front license plate.

(2) The dealer obtains a signed written acknowledgment from the person taking delivery of the motor vehicle acknowledging both of the following:

(A) The person expressly refused installation of a bracket or other means of securing the front license plate.

(B) The person understands that California law requires a license plate to be displayed from and securely fastened to the front of the motor vehicle and that the hardware necessary to securely fasten the front plate is available from the dealer.

(b) A manufacturer or distributor may not sell or distribute in this state a new motor vehicle for which the department issues two license plates, unless that motor vehicle is equipped or provided with a bracket or other means of securing the license plates.
Added Sec. 1, Ch. 365, Stats. 2004. Effective January 1, 2005.

Hey Windforce, it is, sadly to say, illegal in California to not have a front license plate.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d05/vc11713_17.htm

This is interesting tho:

http://www.petitiononline.com/caplate/petition.html

If you do more research, I think it might be illegal to put those license plate covers too...*shrugs*
G'luck

That petition is full of the dumbest reasons I've ever read for not having front plates!

I live in CA, having front plate really isn't a big deal IMO. And yes, the plate covers are illegal.

Yeah, it was amusing...eh, oh well right, haha. As far as the plate covers go, a friend of mine has smoked plate covers, never gets tagged for them, so I guess their really lucky. But another friend had them on, clear ones, and he got dinged for it. I forget what the fine was--I guess it depends on the mood of the cop, if he's bored, pissed off and having a bad day, or just doesn't care...iono.

if your car is stock you may be able to get away w/ no front plate, but as soon as you slap on some tint and some wheels WATCH OUT!! hahahaha!

It hurt to screw in a front plate on my supra, but its better safe than sorry.

wtf... if you have a lambo, might as well just pay the ticket and forget about the plate. You screwed a hole into your lambo, wow.

i havent had a front plate in years. if you remove your bracket and any evidence of holes, you generally wont get a ticket. but if they see a bracket or holes, then they may give you a ticket.

that petition is dumb. if you tell them you dont want to screw into your bumper they will tell you to put it in the front window on the dashboard. that will get rid of all the things the petition is whining about i think.

I don't have a front plate. If I get a fixing ticket, then I'll put it back on. But I'll take it off as soon as I get the ticket signed off.

$10. which is dumb because all fix it tickets get reduced to $10 after they are fixed, so you might as well not fix it.

Allllright. I'll venture taking off my front plate. What's involved? Do the brackets leave holes on the front bumper? Or am I stupid and missing a big, fat DIY on the other page?

I just sold my 98 civic on Friday.. in the 9 years I had it, I NEVER had my front license plate installed. Ever. I only got hassled about it once.. but it saved me probably about 40 or 50 red light camera tickets near the San Diego airport. If you're REALLY that worried, do what I did and screw it in under the back plate and say you never got one. Then when the cop thinks you're a stupid person and goes back and checks your rear plate, he tells you it's back there.. Then you smack yourself on the forehead and act dumb.
