Might relocate to San Fran-advice needed

Hi Guys,

I might relocate to San Fransico as my job is opening an office by end of year there.

I wanted to know what areas are good for living? I'm used to high rent because of Manhattan but could always save a buck or two.

Any suggestions? I have been trying to get an idea of areas from craigslist but not too sure what would be good.

I live on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, it's very safe and one of the best areas to live in the city, i am looking for the same in San Fran.

Thanks in advance!

Don't call it San Fran. Locals seem to get offended by that...

It all depends on what part of the Bay Area your office is opening up at. Is it opening up in Downtown San Francisco? Are you willing to commute with your own car? Do you like public transportation?

If you're looking to live in The City, public transportation is highly recommended since they'll chop your arms and legs off for a parking space. If you prefer to drive your own car, well...have fun circling and parking blocks away from where you want to be and have plenty of quarters and good running legs. Quarters will only last you 15 minutes at the meter.

If you're ok with living a little bit out of S.F., I'd recommend maybe living out in Burlingame, or Redwood City. Both are located on the Peninsula and are very close to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit - which is the Bay's subway system).

If you can afford it, Marin County is nice. San Rafael, Sausalito, Tiberon are all nice areas, but with those area comes HIGH RENT.

PM me if you want more detailed info.

The city is too expensive and you will have a hard time finding parking (people will also hit your car a lot ) If you are working near downtown I suggest you look into staying in Berkeley, albany, el cerrito. They are pretty nice cities, and you'll have quick access to public transp. (BART). That way you wont have to cross the bridge, and you can take a 20 min nap on your way to work.

Closest "affordable" and "nice" housing is probably in the Sunset District (closer to the beach is nice, but not too close to Golden Gate Park... lots of bums sleep there at night)

definitely want to stay in San francisco. I only have a 15 min commute from the UES to Mid-town now so i'm a bit spoiled.
public transportation is ideal for me until i can tell if i need a vehicle again or not

i'll be in touch as i find out more thanks again

+1

Yea thats definitely Manhattan and if garages are as much as Manhattan $300+ a month then a car might be out of the question.
