3rd Gear Tranny issue (who/where) ?

Good Day everyone,
This is Jovan from Mountain View (Black Si) who gets lost at meets. I am sure you all have heard of :
Honda TSB 08-020 April 12, 2008 (3RD GEAR)

I have had this problem and had it patched up a while ago by mtf fluid (patch up tsb). I am going to be bringing my car in to have this looked at soon.. I actually am at the dealer (Anderson - Palo Alto) complaining a lot and am feeling like they are not going to like me soo much when I come in w/ this TSB in hand :

I was wondering who else in the area :
1.) has this issue
2.) got the mtf fluid patch
3.) What dealer you intend to go to in order to get this fixed...

Also do you have this issue :
My si is making a noise ... increased throttle anywhere from third gear on starting at 3krpm .. it is an increasingly louder whine ...
Sounds like :
YouTube - 3rd gear pull with PAR Straight gears in
YouTube - Straight Cut Gears
but not sooo loud...
But yeah, when he backs off the gas in the video that jerky whine...
I hear all of that? is it also a part of this bad synchro...

Never heard this sound before in any manual tranny and it sounds like something is off in the tranny to me? Bad synchro?

- Best wishes to all on this fix....
I am doing my research and looking for the best dealer to take this to as it is 9hours of labor and some serious work and I don't want my car f'ed up.

I am going to raise hell if honda tries to say i can't get this fix as the mtf fluid fixed it... This is a hardware issue that is fixed by hardware .. not added friction from thicker tranny oil.

Look forward to everyone's responses.

Hey! I have a 07 NHBP FA5 and I actually tried going to Anderson first because I live in palo alto, but they are really really like... shady over there. They are used to dealing with clueless old white men (yes im profiling! I live there so I can do it lol, plus im white so w/e anyways) who have tons of $$ so they have a tendency to rip everyone off. I am bringing mine to Stevens creek, and I spoke with Manager of the service department there, and he was saying its a good idea to wait a little while and dont bring it in right away because, really do you want your car to be one of the FIRST transmissions to be disassembled? He said he would order the parts for me and call me when they arrive later in the week, and he'd let me know how the cars that have the service run and make sure he would get me an appointment with someone with the experience of doing the 3rd gear service. *SHIT that was long sorry!*

lol but anyways, yeah go to Stevens creek and ask to speak to Dave the service manager hes really nice!

Thanks about the heads up at Anderson..
I will make sure to take you up on the advice at Steven's Creek.

Did you get the mtf tranny oil tsb applied to your car and did it stop the 3rd gear issue? I did and it 'masked' it.. But I now want the fix? I don't think a tech could reproduce as the new tranny oil is masking the problem currently.. I didn't see the 3rd gear issue until like 22k miles on my car and on my oill... Hmmm, I have the slip showing that they reproduce the 3rd gear issue.. etc.. Hope this and some convo works out.

You present a good point about being a test dummy. I agree and will wait a bit. Thanks for your lengthy response and info :). Look forward to hearing from everyone else..

This is the last issue I have been having w/ my Si and I hope to get her fixed up so she never has to see a dealer again.

I havent gotten the mtf thing fixed.I mentioned it when I brought in my car at the 10,00 service (in febuary 08) but I don't think the service adviser liked me questioning him about the tsb on the mtf b/c he started getting all defensive saying it didnt apply (that was at anderson)

i'll let you know how that turns out. i'm talking with him on wednesday for the same issue. i had the "new" MTF fix, but the problem came back. i talked to Ray at SC honda, and he said honda frowns on aftermarket fluids (i have royal purple)... they're gonna get an earful from me. they haven't ordered the parts for me yet, because they wanna "reconfirm" my tranny grinding.. what a load of BS..

i'm gonna be there around 11-11:15 hopefully.

and from past experience, i've been treated like sh!t there.. maybe it's because i'm only 20? regardless it's unacceptable..

my problem came back.. my royal purple MTF is masking the problem pretty well also, i'm gonna have a tough time proving the grinding again.. wish me luck! looks like i'll be the test dummy, hopefully. you might have to "reconfirm" the problem also.. so messed up, i was already documented there also..

i hope this is the last issue also, but i doubt it..

by the way guys, i'm brandon from cupertino.

Right now I am debating if I want to take my car in for 3rd gear. I got the MTF fluid patch at San Leandro Honda and I have not experienced 3rd gear popping out on me anymore. I'm hesistant to bringing in since 3rd gear stopped popping out on me. I'm still experiencing 2nd gear grind. Any suggestions?

i don't really, but sometimes you have no choice.. where else do we go for a valve adjustment? it says in the manual don't drive with the spare tire on the front axle. the guys at SC Honda said it was fine.. and i love it when they ask me whether my car is auto or manual... yeah... i don't trust them either

how many miles? i'd do it ASAP if i were you, or at least before the engine/powertrain warranty is up. while my tranny is ripped apart, i want them to take a look at how damaged 2nd gear is also... maybe that'll be enough proof..

Just a bit over 7000 miles. I want them to fix my second gear grind so it might be worth taking it in.

Do you think if I tell them that I got the MTF fluid patch and it fixed my 3rd gear popping out, they'll still fix it? Or should I just tell them that its still popping out so they'll fix 3rd gear?

I have appointment with San Leandro Honda tomorrow for the third gear on my 2008 FG2.
The service manager set it up without any questions.
Hope everything will be ok.

This is what I got from his latest email to me:
" We can not just go ahead and perform that bulletin that day. We will have to check your vehicle diagnose and verify the complaint first. Then if the problem is verified we will go ahead and order any parts needed. If your car does need that repair it will take a few days to complete. At that time we will be able to provide a rental vehicle. " (Todd Paul)

doesn't matter.. they'll need to replicate the f$cking problem before they do anything.. my car didn't grind today during the test drive (no f$cking surprise...) as a result Dave will have to talk to the district service rep.. i may not be able to get the parts... when you go in, tell them that it still grinds. they'll need to take it for a test drive. good luck..

the worst part about this is that a tech confirmed it from before.. now they have to "reconfirm" it... so messed up....

Just called and talked to their Service Manager Jim @ Capital Honda. He was clueless and was not awared of any recall. So I sent him over the TSB pdf w/ the 3rd gear issue and he told me that that was basically for their Technician on how to fix the problem and there was no official recall bulletin that they received.

So he told me if my car is really having these symptoms to make an appt. and bring her in. Prolly get the same shit that everyone else is experiencing where they'll need to replicate it fist. IF I do bring her in, I'm planning on leaving my SS and cable brushing on. They can try to pinpoint that as the issue, but I think the minute they pop my hood, I'm already at fault w/ all my mods.
